ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The UNO baseball team took one of two games in a doubleheader with Missouri Western, winning the first game 6-4 while dropping the nightcap 2-1 on Wednesday. It was the start of a six-game road trip for the Mavericks. UNO is now 16-9 on the year and 6-4 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Game 1
#Brian Strawn# hit a bases-loaded double, and #Brett Koehn# had a two RBI single to key a five-run fifth inning to propel the Mavs to a 6-4 win in the opening seven-inning game. #Tom Schmidt# picked up the win on the mound for UNO. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter over four and a third innings to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Game 2
The Mavericks ran into a hot pitcher in the second game. Missouri Western's A.J. Huttenlocker pitched a complete game, fanning 13 UNO hitters and allowed only a sacrifice fly to #Andrew Hansen# in the eighth as the Mavs fell short by a run. Koehn and Hansen each went 2 for 4 in the game. Pitcher #Wes Simmons# took the loss for the Mavs. He allowed just two hits, struck out two and walked five. He allowed both Missouri Western runs in the second inning, part of his four innings of work. He is now 0-1 on the year.
The Mavericks return to action on Friday, March 20 at 1 p.m. with the first game of a doubleheader against the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist.
