The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team will kick off the 2009 campaign with a road trip to Colorado for a pair of non-conference matches against Metro State and Colorado School of Mines. UNO will face third-ranked Metro State on Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. at Auraria Field. On Aug. 30, UNO will be in Golden, Colo., to take on CSM. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
UNO In Season Openers
The Mavericks hold a 5-5 record all-time in season-opening contests and are 1-4 when opening the season on the road. It is the second time in school history the Mavs will face Metro State to open the season. In 2004, Metro State blanked UNO 5-0 to start the year. The last UNO season-opening win came last season with a 2-0 shutout of Rockhurst at UNO Soccer Field.
The Series
UNO and Metro State have met four times, including once in the national semifinal of the NCAA Tournament in 2004. The Roadrunners own the series advantage over the Mavericks. But it was the Mavericks who won the last meeting on Oct. 5, 2007 with a 2-0 win at UNO Soccer Field. It will be the first-ever meeting between Nebraska-Omaha and Colorado School of Mines.
Scouting The Roadrunners and Orediggers
Metro State is ranked third nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America top-25 preseason poll that was released Aug. 11. The Roadrunners went 20-2-3 last season, won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and reached the NCAA Tournament semifinals.
CSM is coming off its most successful season in school history. The team made its first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament and finished with a 12-6-3 overall record.
The Coaches
Head coach Don Klosterman has compiled a 170-39-7 (.803) overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to seven-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2008). In those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons (2002-2007), and led the team to a 2005 National Championship. During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005).
The Roadrunners are coached by Adrianne Almaraz who is entering her second season as head coach. She guided Metro State to a 20-2-3 overall record in her first year as the team reached the national semifinals.
CSM is coached by Frank Kohlenstein who is entering his fifth season. He led the Orediggers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in the schools history last season.

UNO will continue its road trip with a weekend trip to Kirksville, Mo., for the Truman Tournament hosted by Truman State. The Mavericks will face Central Oklahoma at 2 p.m. on Sept. 4 and St. Edward's (Texas) at 10 a.m. on Sept. 6.
