On The Road Again
The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MIAA) will be back on the road this weekend when they head to Kirksville, Mo., for a pair of non-conference matches at the Truman State Labor Day Classic. The Mavericks will look for their first win of the season when they face Central Oklahoma (0-2) on Friday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m.
UNO will face 23rd-ranked St. Edward's (2-0) on Sept. 6 in its second match of the tournament. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. at the Truman Soccer Pitch.
Last Week
The Mavericks opened the 2009 season with a road trip to Colorado for a pair of non-conference matches. UNO faced third-ranked Metro State in the season opener on Aug. 28. The Roadrunners got out to a quick 1-0 lead at 11:17 of the first half on one of Jen Thomas' two goals of the match. MSU added one more goal in the first and another in the second before UNO finally got on the board on an unassisted Lindsey Nealon goal at 70:29 of the second half. UNO fell 3-1.
UNO looked to rebound in its second match of the weekend against Colorado School of Mines. It was the first ever meeting between the two schools. CSM netted the first two goals of the game, scoring in the first and second half. Jerica Kuncl's penalty kick in the 63rd minute put the Mavericks on the board, but it wasn't enough as UNO fell 2-1 to the Orediggers.
The Series
UNO and Central Oklahoma have faced each other just once. UCO edged the Mavericks on its home field 3-2 on Aug. 26, 2005. It will be the first-ever meeting between Nebraska-Omaha and St. Edward's.
Scouting The Bronchos and Hilltoppers
Central Oklahoma enters the Truman Labor Day Classic 0-2 on the year. The Bronchos fell to University of Incarnate Word in their opener 2-1 on Aug. 28. UCO faced St. Edward's in its second game of the season on Aug. 30 and was blanked 2-0 by the Hilltoppers. UCO midfielder Meghan Saliba leads the team with one goal on the year.
St. Edward's enters the tournament with a 2-0 record and moved into the NSCAA national poll at No. 23. The latest rankings were released Sept. 1.
The Hilltoppers recorded shut outs in both of their wins last weekend. They downed Missouri Southern 3-0 in their season opener on Aug. 28 and blanked Central Oklahoma 2-0 on Aug. 30. SEU midfielder Stacey Copeland has two goals and leads the Hilltoppers in scoring.
The Coaches
Head coach Don Klosterman enters his 11th season at the helm of the Maverick women's soccer team. He has compiled a 170-41-7 (.796) overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to seven-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2008). In those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons (2002-2007), and led the team to a 2005 National Championship. During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005).
UCO is coached by Mike Cook who is in his 12th year as head coach. He owns a 174-56-12 record as the only coach in school history. He entered the 2009 campaign ranked third among Division II coaches in career victories and sixth in career winning percentage (.765).
The Hilltoppers are coached by fourth-year coach Nick Cowell. He has compiled an overall record of 52-10-3.
Looking For A Win
With two losses to start the season, UNO hopes to avoid its first 0-3 start in school history. In 2007, the Mavericks opened the season with a pair of losses to CSU-Dominguez Hills and UC-San Diego, but rebounded with a victory over Regis in dominant fashion, 7-1.
Point Leaders
Through two games, UNO has tallied just two unassisted goals. Senior midfielder Lindsey Nealon scored the first Maverick goal of year against Metro State. Sophomore forward Jerica Kuncl scored on a penalty kick against Colorado School of Mines. Both players have two points this season.
Sharing Time In Net
Maverick netminders Elizabeth Odorisio and Lauren Fox have split time in net through two matches this season. The two have logged 90 minutes each, but Odorisio has started both matches and was credited with both losses.
What's On Tap?
The Mavericks will kick off their three-game home stand and MIAA conference play against Missouri Western on Thursday, Sept. 10. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start at UNO Soccer Field. UNO will host Truman State in a conference tilt Saturday, Sept. 12. Kickoff is set for noon.
