UNO Nabs First Win Over Prairie Wolves, 65-49

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO men's basketball team opened regular-season play on Saturday, capturing a 65-49 win over Nebraska Wesleyan at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the victory, the Mavericks are 1-0 (0-0 MIAA) on the year.
Senior guard Tyler Bullock led Nebraska-Omaha with 24 points on 9-for-16 shooting from the field, while also adding a team-leading seven rebounds. Bullock also had five assists and four steals in 31 minutes of action.
Senior guard Jeff Martin chipped in nine points on a trio of 3-pointers, and sophomore forward Alex Welhouse added a pair of scores from long range as well. As a team, the Mavs shot 40 percent for the night to the Prairie Wolves' 31 percent.
Senior guard Torrian Harris started the night with UNO's first basket to take a 2-0 lead, and NWU's Jim Lance responded with a tip-in to tie it. A 15-2 scoring run put the Mavericks up by 13, and a pair of treys by Welhouse made it at 14-point advantage midway through the half. Nebraska-Omaha was led by Martin's nine points in the first period, enjoying a 33-27 tally by halftime.
In the second stanza, Bullock came on strong for the Mavs, totaling 16 points on .600 shooting from the floor. True freshman guard Caleb Steffensmeier, who made his collegiate debut, also chipped in five points with a 5-for-6 performance at the free throw line. UNO took its largest lead of the game with 12 minutes remaining, with a Bullock free throw making it 49-31. Five straight points from the senior kept the lead at 15, and six charity shots in the final minutes closed the contest at 65-49.
Wesleyan was topped by three players in double-figure scoring – Dylan Aylward (13 points), Jim Lance (12) and Bryce Arp (10). Arp and Aylward also pulled down seven boards apiece.
UNO returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 17, hosting Rockhurst at Sapp Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
