EMPORIA, Kan. -- The UNO men's basketball team played down to the wire in search of its first MIAA win, but it was not enough to get past Emporia State in a 74-72 loss on Wednesday night. With the defeat, the Mavericks are 3-4 (0-3 MIAA) on the year, while ESU improves to 5-3 (2-0 MIAA).
Senior guard Tyler Bullock led all scorers with 28 points for the night, shooting 9-for-15 from the floor and 10-for-11 from the free throw line. The Lincoln, Neb., native added a pair of rebounds, four assists and three steals in 37 minutes of action.
Junior guard Mitch Albers also had his best performance of the season, totaling 18 points and a team-best five rebounds.
The Hornets had three players finish in double-figure scoring -- Matt Boswell (17 points), Robert Moores (14) and Taylor Euler (13). Boswell and Adam Holthaus each pulled down seven boards.
The two squads shot at nearly identical clips from the field, with Emporia State at 47.9 percent (23-for-48) and UNO at 47.4 percent (27-for-57). The Mavs hit 15-of-18 shots from the free throw line, while ESU was 11-for-21 from long range.
Nebraska-Omaha kept its turnovers low, committing just seven for the second straight game. The Hornets had 13 turnovers, allowing 18 Mav points as a result. In addition, UNO took advantage inside, scoring 30 points in the paint to ESU's 14. For its part, Emporia outrebounded the Mavericks 35-25.
Up 17-6 early, Emporia State staved off a Maverick comeback with a double-figure lead until seven minutes remaining in the first half, when seven straight points by Albers cut the lead to 29-22. ESU's Euler had the Hornets' final two baskets, giving his team a 34-24 advantage by halftime.
The Mavericks' 15-7 run to open the second stanza was capped by an Albers trey that narrowed the margin to two. UNO took its first lead of the game on a layup by Bullock, followed by a jumper by freshman guard Caleb Steffensmeier.
Both teams traded ties seven more times, knotting the score at 72-72 with 18 seconds remaining in the game on a layup from Albers. The Hornets' final drive to the basket drew a Maverick foul to send Moores to the free throw line, where he hit both shots to give Emporia State the 74-72 win.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 11, hosting Northwest Missouri State at Sapp Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m.
