BOYS TOWN, Neb. - With 16 games of the 2010 season already in the books, the No. 16 University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team played its first home games of the season Sunday afternoon and swept conference rival Truman by scores of 8-6 and 10-3 at the Ball Park at Boys Town.
The win improves the Mavericks to 13-5 overall on the season with a 9-1 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association mark, and snaps their three-game slide. The Bulldogs dip to 4-14 with a 1-9 conference record.
UNO started the first game with five runs in the first inning that started from a bases loaded single from #Tyler Lundy that scored two runs. Travis Jacobi put two more UNO runs on the board with a base-clearing triple. Jeremy Klein# added the fifth run of the inning off a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Jacobi.
The Bulldogs responded with five of their own in the top of the second to tie the game, 5-5. Starter #David Conrad# walked four and hit one batter in the inning as Truman scored all of its runs off just one hit. Conrad escaped the inning and received the no decision. The transfer from Northern Iowa went five innings, allowing six runs - all earned, on four hits while striking out three and walking five batters.
#Jed Hanson# scored on a wild pitch by Kyle Veazey to give UNO the lead, 6-5. Truman tied the game back up in the fifth on a Brett Budd RBI single.
#Brady Hohl walked and Andrew Hansen ripped his team-leading ninth double of the season to put the Mavericks back up 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Tyler Splichal# followed Hansen with a double of his own that put UNO up 8-6, which was good enough for the win.
#Colby McCord# (2-0) picked up his second win of the season in relief. He pitched two scoreless innings and gave up just two hits.
In game two, the Mavs scored three runs in the second and fourth innings, and two runs in the third and sixth on 15 hits to drop the Bulldogs 10-3 to earn their sixth doubleheader sweep of the season. Splichal hit his first collegiate home run and added a double in the game. The Bellevue, Neb., native went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the game. He leads the team with 28 hits on the year.
Klein went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. #Trevor Gappa#, #Brady Hohl# and Hansen each recorded two hits in the game.
Freshman right-hander #Matt Tew# (2-1) got the win for the Mavericks in his third career start. He went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five batters.
UNO and Truman will finish off the four-game series tomorrow with another doubleheader. Game one is slated for 12 p.m. at Ball Park at Boys Town.
