UNO Splits Doubleheader With Emporia State

BOYS TOWN, Neb. - The No. 28 University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team split its doubleheader with No. 13 Emporia State, winning the first game 2-1 behind a stellar outing by #Joe Holtmeyer#, and fell in the second game 4-1 Sunday afternoon to open the four-game series Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
UNO is now 16-6 with a 12-2 conference mark, while ESU moves to 19-7 with a 13-5 record in the MIAA.
In the first game, Holtmeyer (4-1) turned in his second straight complete game, going all seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the year. The sophomore right-hander allowed one run on three hits while striking out 13 and walking three Hornet batters in the game. It's the fourth time the Omaha native has recorded double digit strike outs this season. He leads the team with 74 strikeouts on the season and sports a 1.99 ERA in 40.2 innings pitched.
UNO catcher #Jake Benne ripped a single that scored Travis Jacobi# to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in the second.
The Hornets got their only run of the game in the third inning off a solo home run from Chris Dobler. The Mavs regained the lead in the bottom of the third when #Brady Hohl# scored what was the game-winning run off an error by ESU short stop Andy Cotton. ESU had three errors in the game.
In the second game, the Hornets put runs up on the board in the first, third, sixth and ninth innings and collected the 4-1 win.
UNO got its only run of the game in the sixth when Benne single to score #Jeremy Klein# to bring the score to 3-1. Klein reached by drawing a walk and stole second to get into scoring position.
#David Conrad# (2-1) took the loss for UNO. He went six innings, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out five and walking four batters.
UNO tallied 10 hits to ESU's five, but stranded 12 runners on base in the game.
Center fielder #Tyler Lundy# led UNO, going 5-for-8 on the afternoon with a triple and a double - both in the first game. Benne went 4-for-7 at the plate with two RBIs on the day.
The series will conclude tomorrow with another doubleheader. Game one is slated for 12 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
