JOPLIN, Mo. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader against Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rivals Missouri Southern State by scores of 7-1 and 13-4 at Joe Becker Stadium.
The Mavericks have won five straight and improved to 7-1 overall with a 5-1 conference mark. The losses dip the Lions to 3-12 overall and 1-7 in MIAA play on the year.
UNO took the first game 7-1. Sophomore right-hander #Joe Holtmeyer# (2-0) went all seven innings and picked up his second win of the season. The Omaha native fanned a career-high 13 MSSU batters in the win. He allowed one unearned run on four Lion hits. #Jed Hanson# homered to lead the Maverick offense. It was his first of the season.
Game two saw four lead changes, but a season-high 19 hits and a seventh-inning surge helped UNO to a 13-4 win. MSSU scored its four runs on four hits. #Mark Johnson# (1-0) collected his first win of the season. The senior pitched 3.1 innings and gave up no hits or runs while striking out three. #David Conrad# (1-0) started the game and lasted 4.2 innings. The senior right-hander allowed four runs on four hits and struck out a season-high seven batters in the no decision.
The Mavericks exploded in the seventh inning, putting seven runs across the plate on seven hits to take a 10-4 lead after trailing 4-3 heading into the inning. Hanson hit a solo shot to start the inning, which tied the game, 4-4. It was his second home run of the day. UNO loaded the bases after Hanson's home run starting with single by #Tyler Splichal#. #Tyler Lundy was hit by a pitch and Jeremy Klein drew a walk to load the bases. Brady Hohl# hit a single and scored a run, and #Travis Jacobi# added a two-run single to add to the lead. Hanson collected his second hit and RBI of the inning with a single that scored Jacobi.
UNO added three more in the ninth, led by a #Colby McCord# solo home run to start the inning. It was McCord's first career long ball as a Maverick.
The Mavs and the Lions will play two more games tomorrow. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
