UNO Splits Doubleheader With MWSU

BOYS TOWN, Neb. - The Nebraska-Omaha baseball team bounced back from an 8-6 loss in the first game and earned a 12-2 win by 10-run rule in the second game of its doubleheader against Missouri Western State Wednesday at the Ballpark at Boys Town.

The Griffons used a five-run second inning to take the first lead of the game. They had some help when second baseman #Andrew Hansen# made a great diving catch to take a hit away from MWSU's Ian Atkinson, but overthrew first baseman #Tyler Splichal# on what would have been the third out of the inning. The Griffons kept the inning going and scored all of their runs in the inning with two outs, four of which were unearned.

MWSU plated three more in the fifth to take its largest lead of the game at 8-1. UNO responded with three of its own in the bottom half of the inning when Hansen blasted a three-run home run to left field to shave three runs off of MWSU's lead. It was Hansen's second long ball of the year.

Left-hander #Mike Kubo pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in relief duty in the top of the sixth which kept the score at 8-6. Jake Benne# drove in a run and Splichal hit a RBI double to bring the Mavericks within two runs, but Griffon closer Andy Hebrard shut the door on anymore of a UNO rally to record his second save of the season.

In game two, UNO got a solid pitching performance from starter #Zach Croonquist and reliever Ryan Bolt# to go along with a six-run first inning.

Croonquist (3-2) left the game in the fifth due to an injury, but because of the 10-run run rule he was credited with his third win of the season. He went four innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out four with one walk. Bolt relieved him and finished out the game, going three innings while allowing one run on three hits. He struck out a career-high four batters and walked one.

Benne capped of UNO's six-run inning with a two-run double with two outs. In the second, UNO tallied three more with the help of a Hansen single and designated hitter #Tim Urban# launched a two-run home run to deep center field.

Urban blasted his second home run of the game in the sixth with a solo shot to right center. He was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the game. Ubran has three home runs on the year.

#Tyler Lundy# recorded his first five-hit game of the season going 5-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored in the second game. He leads the team with 43 RBI on the year. Lundy's run in the seventh off a Splichal single enforced the 10-run rule.

All nine Maverick batters had at least one hit in the game.

UNO will be back on the field this weekend for a four-game series with Northwest Missouri State. The two schools will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 24 with the first game slated for a 12 p.m. start. #Joe Holtmeyer# is scheduled to start the first game on Saturday and will look to record his school record 113th strikeout of the season.
