BOYS TOWN, Neb. - It was a record-setting day for #Joe Holtmeyer# who took the hill for the Nebraska-Omaha baseball team in the first game of its doubleheader against Northwest Missouri State Saturday afternoon. The sophomore right-hander broke the 49-year old school record for strikeouts in a season set by Barry Miller in 1961, recording his 113th strikeout of the season and topped it off by tossing UNO's first complete-game no-hitter since 1995 in the 8-1 win.
Holtmeyer (8-1) went all seven innings, giving up the one run on a sacrifice fly by NWMSU's Landinn Echardt in the sixth inning. He finished with 12 strikeouts while walking four and hitting two batters to earn his career-high eighth win of the season. Holtmeyer tallied his record-breaking 113th strikeout against the first batter of the game he faced, sitting down Nick Pfeiffer swinging. He now has 124 strikeouts this season and 201 in his career.
"I just came out and tried to throw strikes. My control wasn't all there today, but when you got the guys in the field to back you up and the offense puts up some runs, it helps," said Holtmeyer. "The record means a lot to me. There has been a lot of really good pitchers in the program's history that have been drafted and have reached other career milestones. It's a great feeling to get the record."
UNO got out to a 1-0 lead early in the first when #Tyler Splichal# launched a solo shot off the scoreboard in left field.
The Mavericks opened the game up in the sixth inning, putting five runs up on the board. #Andrew Hansen drilled a two-run RBI single to right center which scored Splichal and Tyler Lundy#. Hansen led the Maverick bats, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
In the nightcap, UNO needed just seven of the scheduled nine innings to take care of the Bearcats 11-1 by the 10-run rule. The Mavericks used a seven-run fifth inning to balloon their lead to 9-1 and plated two more in the sixth to take an 11-1 lead. The Bearcats couldn't score a run despite putting runners in scoring position on second and third, but couldn't get them home.
UNO's big seventh inning was led by a Splichal two-run double which allowed Lundy, who also doubled in the inning to reach base, to score. #Ryan Hook and Travis Jacobi# added RBI singles in the inning. Lundy and Splichal each extended their hitting streaks. Lundy has now hit safely in 12-straight games, while Splichal has a hit in each of his last 11 games.
Hook was 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored in the second game. Splichal launched his second solo home run of the day in the sixth. He now has five on the year.
The Mavericks and Bearcats will close out the series on Sunday, April 25 with another doubleheader. The first game is slated for 12 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
Notes: Derek Mueller threw UNO's last complete-game no-hitter in 1995...the Mavericks combined for a no-hitter against Northwest Missouri on March 12, 2003 when they used five pitchers to earn a 2-0 win over the Bearcats.
