BOYS TOWN, Neb. - The Nebraska-Omaha baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader with Northwest Missouri State (17-31, 15-19 MIAA), taking the first game 13-5 while dropping the second game 7-4 on a cold and windy afternoon of baseball at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The Mavericks won the four-game series 3-1 and moved to 30-14 overall with 26-10 mark in the MIAA.
The Mavericks had multiple run innings in four innings, including a five-run sixth inning in their rout of NWMSU in the first game.
#Andrew Hansen started the scoring with an RBI single and Tim Urban# followed by drilling a two-run double that gave UNO a 3-0 lead.
#Trevor Gappa# blasted a two-run home run - the first of his career, in the third inning to increase the lead to 8-1. NWMSU carved four runs off their deficit in the fifth, but #Tyler Splichal#'s two-run single in the sixth helped put the game out of reach.
Freshman #Matt Tew# (4-3) earned his fourth win of the year, giving up five runs - all earned, off eight hits while striking out two and walking five. #Mike Kubo# pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless and hitless ball with one strikeout out of the bullpen. Senior closer #Brandon Dahl# tossed a scoreless inning in his school record 58th career appearance. Dahl passed Chris Irsfeld who made 57 appearances in a UNO jersey in the early 90s.
The Mavericks forced the Bearcats to use four different pitchers in the game and recorded hits off each of them.
The Mavericks trailed the entire game of the nightcap as the Bearcats got out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a help of a two-run single from designated hitter Landinn Echardt.
UNO cut the margin to one in the second when #Travis Jacobi# laced a two-out, two-run double to left center field. The game was locked at a 3-2 Bearcat lead for the next five frames as both teams' starters were solid in weather usually unfavorable for a pitcher.
The Bearcats added a run in the eighth and three more in the top of the ninth to take a 7-2 lead. UNO responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning off a #Tyler Lundy# two-run double, but fell short on a comeback. The hit extended Lundy's hitting streak to 14 games, the longest by a Maverick this season.
Freshman #Ryan Tomlinson# (1-2) got the start and was effective in 7 1/3 innings despite taking his second loss of the season. He allowed four runs - all earned, on seven hits while striking out three and walking just one batter. Chase Anderson (2-0) got the win for the Bearcats, going six innings to pick up his second win.
The Mavs' three wins over NWMSU have assured them a spot in the 2010 MIAA Baseball Championship, which will be held May 6-9 in Kansas City, Kan., at Community America Ballpark. UNO won the tournament last season.
UNO will wrap up its regular season action when Central Missouri, the second ranked team in Division II visits for a four-game series. The Mavericks and Mules will open the series on Friday, April 30 with a scheduled nine inning game which is slated for 2 p.m.
