Mavs Advance Past Truman in MIAA Tournament

Kansas City, Mo. - The UNO women's tennis team defeated Truman State in Saturday's action of the MIAA Women's Tennis Championship Tournament in Kansas City, 5-4. The narrow victory moves the Mavericks a step closer to the final, as they will now face Northwest Missouri State in the semifinals, who blanked Missouri Western earlier Saturday. The win boosts the Mavericks' overall season record to 8-7, while Truman State's season is over with the loss.

UNO fell in No. 1 doubles, but bounced back in No. 2 doubles when #Heather Hottman and Samantha Thomas# defeated Kelsey Kuykendall and Dagmar Velez of TSU, 8-4. Another victory was secured when #Kelsie Olson and Mary Lausten# won at No. 3 doubles, 9-8.

In singles play, #Traci Moklestad# was defeated in No. 1 singles by Amy Ochs of Truman, 3-6, 6-1 (6-2). The Mavs did not earn another victory until #Heather Hottman# won in No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-4. It was left to the hot hand of #Mary Lausten# to clinch it for the Mavs, and that she did with a victory in No. 6 singles over Lauren Hawkins, 6-0, 6-1.

The Mavericks will now face Northwest Missouri State in the semifinals, a team they lost to just a few days ago. The match against NWMSU will take place in St. Joseph, Mo., after some schedule shifting due to weather. Should the Mavs defeat the Bearcats in the 6:30 p.m. scheduled start, they will advance to the championship final, which is scheduled for a noon start on Sunday.
