Balanced Attack Fuels Mavs in Home Opener

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO women's basketball team made new head coach Chance Lindley's home debut a successful one, taking care of business in a 70-57 win over Upper Iowa before 527 fans at Sapp Fieldhouse Tuesday night.
UNO, which improved to 2-1 on the season, used an 18-8 spurt to close the first half and take control of what was a 20-20 game. Despite the Peacocks (0-1) hitting eight of their first 18 3-point attempts (44.4 percent), the Mavs held a comfortable lead throughout the second half, thanks to a balanced scoring attack with four players in double-figures and a dominating 36-8 advantage in the paint.
Paige Frauendorfer led the Mavericks with 15 points and nine rebounds. Jamie Nash and Heather Pohl each had 13 points, and freshman Cathleen Cox had a career-high 10 points. Rese Huddlin was just shy of double-figures with nine points. Huddlin also had eight rebounds.
Pohl scored seven of the Mavs' first 10 points to open the game, and UNO jumped out to an early 16-8 lead. But the Peacocks battled back with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 16-16. Frauendorfer broke a 20-20 deadlock with a jumper, then Cox came off the bench to score four straight points to make it 26-20 with 7:32 left in the half.
Cox continued to spark the Mavs with a long jumper at the 5:31 mark to put the Mavericks up 30-25. Huddlin sank two free throws, then made a layup after a great feed from Cox to push UNO's lead to nine at 34-25 before the final media timeout.
On the Mavs' first possession after the media timeout, Frauendorfer just beat the shot clock with a baseline jumper, then Frauendorfer drove the lane and found Huddlin underneath the basket for another layup to make it 38-25, capping a 10-0 Maverick run. Upper Iowa's Whitney Kieffer ended the run and the half with a 3-pointer, but the Mavs took the double-digit lead, 38-28, into the break. The Peacocks started the half shooting 60.0 percent on 9-of-15 from the field, but they cooled off down the stretch, hitting just 1-of-6 to close the first frame.
After halftime, the Mavs extended the lead to 47-33 on two buckets by Gebers sandwiched between a jumper and a 3-pointer by Nash. Upper Iowa reeled off the next five points to pull back within single digits, but the Mavs answered with a 6-2 run to make it 53-40 with 12:21 left.
Upper Iowa wouldn't go away though, pulling within nine, 58-49, with 6:57 to play. Pohl then buried a 3 from the right wing, and after a Peacock basket, Pohl rebounded her own miss and scored in the paint to make it 62-51 with 5:36 left. The Peacocks then scored on two free throws by Chelsea Garcia, but again Pohl would not let the single-digit lead last long, hitting a 3-pointer from the corner for her eighth straight point for UNO. Following a defensive rebound, Nash found Amanda Woodring on a breakout for an easy layup, giving UNO a comfortable 66-53 lead with 4:31 to play.
Nash nearly had her second double-double of the season, finishing with nine steals and also seven assists in addition to her 13 points.
The Mavs now have one week to prepare for one of their stiffest challenges of the season, as UNO hits the road to face No. 17 Kentucky on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. Kentucky, which finished second in the SEC last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, is 2-0 after a 100-25 throttling of Jacksonville State on Tuesday. Kentucky marks the beginning of a three-game Thanksgiving weekend road swing for the Mavericks. UNO also plays at Western Virginia State (Nov. 26) and at Marshall (Nov. 27).
