
Mavericks Fall to No. 14 Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The UNO women's basketball team hung tough early on at No. 14 Kentucky, but in the end, the Wildcats and their press were too much for the Mavericks, as Kentucky rolled to an 81-48 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum.
Paige Frauendorfer led the Mavericks (2-2) with 12 points, while Jamie Nash had nine and Stacia Gebers had a season-high eight points in the Mavs' first game against a Division I opponent this season. Bria Goss led Kentucky (5-0) with 13 points, and the Wildcats forced 42 Maverick turnovers using a suffocating full-court press. Kentucky came in forcing 36.5 turnovers per game.
The Mavs came out of the gate strong, taking a 4-2 lead early on two Heather Pohl layups. UNO trailed just 11-10 at the 13:56 mark of the first half, but the Wildcats strung together a 15-2 run over the next 3:09 to build the lead to 26-12. After Paige Frauendorfer ended that run with a jumper, Kentucky reeled off the next 15 points to make it 41-14 with 1:46 remaining in the half. Kentucky held UNO scoreless for a span of 7:12, as Amanda Woodring ended the drought with a 3-pointer to make it 41-17.
Kentucky led at the halftime break, 45-19, but the Mavs fared much better in the second half, only being outscored 36-29 by the Wildcats. UNO won the final 10 minutes of the game, 20-17, after trailing by as many as 36 at 64-28 with 10:18 to play.
The Mavs outshot Kentucky in the game, connecting on 47.5 percent (19-of-40) from the field and hitting 36.4 percent on 3-pointers (4-of-11). On the other end, UNO held Kentucky to 41.8 percent (33-of-79) from the field and 18.2 percent (4-of-22) from 3-point land.
UNO also blocked a season-high six shots, four by freshman Taijhe Kelly, and the Mavs held Kentucky below its season average of 91.2 points per game. The Wildcats had defeated their first four opponents by an average margin of 40.5 points, which the Mavs also stayed under.
In addition to leading the Mavs in scoring for the third time in four games, Frauendorfer also led UNO in rebounds for the third time this year with six. Cathleen Cox had seven points on 3-of-3 from the field, and Gebers had four rebounds to go along with her eight points.
The Mavericks are back in action this weekend with two games in West Virginia. On Saturday, UNO faces Division II West Virginia State at 1 p.m. in Institute, W. Va. Then on Sunday, the Mavs close their road trip with a 12 p.m. game at Marshall in Huntington, W. Va.
