JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The 11th-ranked UNO softball team outlasted Lincoln 4-1 in 10 innings, then squeaked out a 1-0 win in a doubleheader sweep of the Blue Tigers on Saturday.
The games were moved from Friday to Saturday following heavy rains. The Mavs improved to 36-6 on the year and 13-1 in MIAA play. The Blue Tigers dropped to 15-25 overall and 5-11 in the MIAA.
In the first game, the Mavericks and Blue Tigers went to extra innings with the score knotted at 1-1, with both runs coming in the second inning. UNO struck first when Emma Wright singled to left field, scoring Amber Lutmer from second. Lincoln tied the game in the bottom half though, when Brianna Weber doubled home Erin Sommerer.
After the stalemate continued through nine innings, the international rule took effect in the 10th, as Ashley Lynch was placed on second base to start the inning. Lindsay Redding moved her over to third on a bunt single, then Redding stole second.
After Alli Hukill struck out, Molly Feichtinger came up with a big double to center field to score both Lynch and Redding for a 3-1 Maverick lead. Feichtinger advanced to third on a groundout by Sarah Elliott, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 before the half-inning ended.
Beth Haley finished off the complete-game win in the bottom of the 10th. Haley allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out nine and walking three.
In game two, Lindsey Slocum and Lincoln's Olivia Durrell engaged in a pitcher's duel, shutting out their respective sides through six innings.
In the top of the seventh, Katelyn Hinton reached on a one-out single to center field, then stole second. Lutmer came through with a single to right field to score Hinton for the only run of the game.
Slocum finished out the win in the bottom of the seventh for her 10th of the season. She allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 11.
The Mavs head to Topeka on Wednesday to face Washburn at 2 p.m. No make-up date has been set yet for the postponed series at Truman.
