Mavericks Sign Magdziarz for 2011-12

OMAHA, Neb. – Junior college transfer Ryan Magdziarz (pronounced MOG-josh) has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the UNO men's basketball team in 2011-12, Head Coach Derrin Hansen announced Tuesday. Magdziarz, a 6-3, 210-pound guard, played his first two collegiate seasons at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan.
“We are excited about signing Ryan and what he brings to our basketball program,” Hansen said. “His ability to shoot the ball and create for others will be a vital asset for our team.”
As a sophomore in 2011, Magdziarz was named first-team All-Region VI Division II and second-team All-East Jayhawk Conference, leading JCCC to a 19-12 record and a runner-up finish in the NJCAA Region VI Tournament. He led his squad with 18.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game and also garnered NJCAA Division II National Player of the Week accolades.
In 2010, he started 31 of 32 games as a true freshman, averaging 12.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.
A two-year starter, Magdziarz has 980 career points, which ranks 10th among the all-time leading scorers in JCCC history, and his 125 career 3-pointers are fifth all-time at the school.
“Ryan comes from a strong tradition of basketball success at Blue Valley High School and a predominant junior college program at Johnson County,” Hansen said. “His tradition of winning in high school and junior college is important to us and our program. Ryan has had two great years at Johnson County, and his durability and knack of scoring will help us with our style of play.”
The son of Joe Magdziarz and Carla Hayes, Ryan is a native of Overland Park, Kan., and a 2009 graduate of Blue Valley High School.
“I went for my first campus visit to UNO last week,” Magdziarz said. “The coaches treated me so well, and I got along great with the players. I'm pumped about the opportunity to play with these guys and for this coaching staff, and I'm looking forward to joining the team for our first year in Division I next season.”
