OMAHA, Neb. – Two junior college transfers – Bill Freeman and Jacques Coleman (pronounced jay-KEYS) -- have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the UNO men's basketball team in 2011-12, Head Coach Derrin Hansen announced Thursday. The duo comes to UNO after beginning their careers at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa.
Freeman is a 6-4, 195-pound guard/forward from Des Moines, Iowa, while Coleman is a 5-11, 160-pound guard from Milwaukee, Wis. In 2011, they helped Ellsworth to an 18-13 overall record and a 9-5 mark in league play. In 2010, the Panthers won the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) championship and ranked 13th in the NJCAA final poll.
Freeman garnered first-team All-Region XI Division II honors in 2011 and was named to the All-Region XI Tournament Team. He ranked second in the ICCAC in scoring, averaging 20.9 points per game, as well as 7.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals per contest. Freeman also led the league with 75 3-pointers made and was second on the squad with 17 blocks.
“Bill is an outstanding athlete who can score the ball in numerous ways,” Hansen said. “His ability to shoot, create, pass and score makes him a very versatile player and one of the best guards in the ICCAC. Not only is Bill a great basketball player, he is also an exceptional person off the court.”
Coleman appeared in all 30 games for ECC last year, averaging 8.3 points 3.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game. As a sophomore, he totaled 249 points, and his 95 assists led Ellsworth for the year. Coleman also finished with 45 steals, second only to Freeman (47).
“Jacques is a tremendous point guard who provides quickness and depth to our team,” Hansen said. “His unselfishness and ability to create for others will be an added bonus.
“We are extremely excited to sign Bill and Jacques from such a quality junior college program at Ellsworth and are eager to see them contribute immediately to our team in 2011-12.”
