The UNO women's soccer team will face its third Summit League foe this season when they travel to Kansas City, Mo., to play UMKC at 7 p.m., on Saturday. The Mavs are 1-1 against Summit League teams this season, as they beat South Dakota, 3-2, on Aug. 28, but fell to North Dakota State, 3-1, last Sunday. UNO will be playing its fifth straight game on the road in the midst of an eight-game road stretch. Saturday's game will be UNO's first ever against UMKC.

UMKC has lost three straight games and is winless in its last five. The Kangaroos are coming off a 3-0 loss at Missouri last Sunday. UMKC's lone win of the year came at Florida International on Sept. 2, a 3-2 overtime win. Taylor Bare leads the Kangaroos with three goals. Ashley Gann has one goal and one assists. The duo has combined for 44 of the Kangaroos' 84 shots this season (52.4 percent).
The Coaches
Don Klosterman is in his 13th year as the head coach of the UNO Mavericks. The only head coach in the program's history, Klosterman has a 196-55-12 record, just four wins from number 200 in his career at UNO. The two-time national coach of the year has led the Mavericks to the Division II national semifinal four times, culminating in the 2005 NCAA Division II national championship. Under Klosterman, the Mavericks are 19-7 all-time in NCAA Division II tournament play and have won six conference titles. Klosterman formerly served as the head men's soccer coach at Benedictine College (1979-83) and Creighton (1984-86). He graduated from Benedictine in 1974.
Chris Cissell is in his first year as the head coach of the Kangaroos. Cissell spent the previous 20 seasons at William Jewell as the men's and women's soccer head coach. Cissell has a 280-97-24 career record in his 21st year as a head coach. Cissell graduated from William Jewell in 1994.
Last Time Out
FARGO, N.D. - The UNO Maverick women's soccer team fell 3-1 at reigning Summit League tournament champion North Dakota State last Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks (3-3-2) trailed 1-0 heading into halftime, but two quick Bison goals out of the gate in the second half were enough to put away UNO, forcing the Mavs into a weekend split with the two North Dakota schools.
Holly Christian opened the scoring on a header in the 29th minute for North Dakota State (6-2-0), which qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season by winning the Summit League tournament championship. Christian notched her second header goal of the game seven minutes after the halftime break to make it 2-0. Then Katie Tallas made it 3-0 on a rebound in the 55th minute.
Katie Pickinpaugh answered quickly for UNO with a penalty kick goal in the 56th minute, but the Mavs couldn't put the ball across the line the rest of the way.
The Bison outshot UNO on goal, 13-4. Katelyn Tschida made a career-high 10 saves for the Mavericks.
Mavs Excited for Challenging First Season in Division I
UNO head coach Don Klosterman is all for breaking new ground. As the only head coach in the 12-year history of UNO women's soccer, Klosterman has had his share of firsts – first game, first win, first conference championship, first national championship. He'll add to that list this season when the Mavericks play their first games as a Division I program.
“We're going to approach this as a championship season,” said Klosterman. “Every single game will be important to us, and focus will be key.”
Key because the Mavericks are not eligible to play for a conference championship during their four-year transition to full Division I status. They won't play a full Summit League schedule until the 2012 season, but Klosterman says that hasn't dampened anyone's enthusiasm.
“Our players are really excited. Nearly everything is going to be new – the competition, the venues, the level of play. We just have to stay positive and enjoy the experience.”
