Archuleta Named to Summit League First Team; Wampl
Nov 1, 2012 | Women's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. - UNO forward Danielle Archuleta was honored for her outstanding senior season, receiving All-Summit League First Team honors, the conference office announced Thursday evening. In addition, freshman midfielder Hannah Wampler was named to the All-Freshmen Team. The awards were based on a vote by the conference's head coaches.
As the only senior for the Mavericks in 2012, Archuleta set the example for the young Maverick team in its first season of competition in The Summit League. She capped her standout four-year career with 12 points on a team-high five goals and two assists. She scored goals in three straight games from Aug. 31 to Sept. 7, and she notched the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Fort Wayne on Sept. 28.
Archuleta's five goals tied for fourth in The Summit League, and her 12 points tied for sixth. The Columbus, Neb., product finished her career tied for 15th in school history in career goals with 14 and 19th in points with 32. A clutch player for the Mavs through the years, Archuleta scored five game-winning goals to tie for 13th in UNO history. She is the first Maverick women's soccer player to earn first-team all-conference honors since 2009.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Wampler was recognized for a strong first year by being named one of The Summit League's top 11 freshmen. The Lincoln, Neb., native started all 18 games and finished second on the team in scoring with seven points on three goals and one assist. Wampler scored two goals, including the match-winner with 20 seconds left, in a 3-2 win at South Dakota on Oct. 5. She also had a goal against South Dakota State on Oct. 26. Wampler's seven points tied for third in freshman scoring in The Summit League. The midfielder was second on the team with 11 shots on goal.
Regular-season champion Oakland swept the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year awards. Forward Kyla Kellermann took home the offensive honor after tying for the conference lead with 19 points and eight goals. Kara Weber took home the defensive award after leading the Oakland back line that gave up just six goals in eight conference games.
Western Illinois goalkeeper Laura Atkinson picked up Goalkeeper of the Year, while South Dakota State forward Diana Potterveld garnered Freshman of the Year after tying for the conference scoring title. Fort Wayne head coach Margaret Saurin was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Mastodons to a 5-2-1 conference record and second-place finish, the first time IPFW has ever qualified for the Summit League Tournament.
