May 5, 2012 | Baseball, General
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The UNO baseball team continued its series at Kansas State on Saturday, falling 14-5 at Tointon Family Stadium. With the loss, UNO drops to 12-34 on the year, while KSU improves to 21-27.
Senior Colby McCord finished 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored, while senior Brady Hohl was 1-for-3 with two runs to his credit.
Kansas State took advantage of 14 walks by the UNO pitching staff and totaled 16 hits on the day. As a team, the Mavericks did not commit an error until the eighth, when two miscues helped KSU score six runs.
Joe Flattery (5-3) earned the win, limiting UNO to one run on seven hits over seven innings of work. Flattery also walked one while issuing five strikeouts for the afternoon. Junior Matt Tew (1-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits over 3.1 innings while striking out two.
UNO took a quick lead in the first, as Hohl and McCord led off with back-to-back singles. Sophomore Caleb Palensky pushed both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and Hohl came in with senior Mark Waldron's sacrifice fly to center to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Kansas State knotted the score at 1-1. Tanner Witt drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third when the Wildcats earned their third straight walk to load the bases. An RBI groundout by Jon Davis resulted in a close play at the plate, scoring Witt to tie the game.
K-State added another run in the second to take their first lead at 2-1, as Dan Klein came across on Ross Kivett's sacrifice fly to right.
In the fourth, the Wildcats stretched it to 6-1 with four runs on five hits. The offensive explosion was helped by Klein's leadoff solo homer to left and King's two-run triple to center.
KSU added another run in the fifth, as Witt came in on a bases-loaded walk. In the sixth, Klein singled in RJ Santigate, pushing it to an 8-1 advantage.
Nebraska Omaha rebounded with four runs on a pair of hits in the eighth. Hohl and Palensky were both hit by pitches, and McCord had a single to left, loading the bases with no outs. Waldron then delivered a two-run single through the right side, scoring Hohl and McCord. Palensky was plated on senior Scotty Donner's RBI groundout, and Waldron came in on McCrite's sacrifice fly to center to bring UNO within three at 8-5.
Despite the Mavs' late rally, Kansas State sealed its victory in the eighth with six runs on five hits, capitalizing on two UNO miscues and
bringing the final score to 14-5.
UNO returns to action on Sunday in the series finale at Kansas State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kan.
