Roadrunners Hold Off Mavericks, 69-65

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The UNO women's basketball team fell 69-65 at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (3-3) led 59-58 with 3:44 to play after a 3-pointer by Ericka House. But the Roadrunners ended the game on an 11-6 run over the final 3:23 to improve to 2-3.
Taijhe Kelly scored a career-high 15 points and had seven rebounds in her return to her home state of California. House also had 15 points. Mikaela Shaw had 13 points and five rebounds.
UNO trailed by as many as eight early on in the first half but rallied with a 23-11 run to close the half to take a 32-28 halftime lead. Out of halftime, the Roadrunners outscored the Mavs 8-2 to take a 36-34 lead at the 17:25 mark.
House hit a 3-pointer and Shaw followed with a layup for a 47-43 Maverick lead with 12:28 left. But CSUB used an 8-0 run to go up 51-47 with 10:24 left. The Mavs again battled back for a four-point lead, 56-52, on a layup by Kelly with 6:08 to play.
With the game tied at 60-60 with 2:40 left, Tyonna Outland hit a 3-pointer to give Bakersfield the lead. She then converted a layup with 2:08 to play to make it 65-60. House answered with a jumper in the paint, but Bakersfield's Shaquita Smith scored a two of her own on the next possession. Down 68-65, the Mavs had the ball with less than 30 seconds to play but misfired on two shots. CSUB added a free throw with six seconds left for the final margin.
The Mavs shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the field and 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from 3-point range. Bakersfield shot 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the floor and 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from long distance. UNO was 10-of-16 from the free throw line, while CSUB was 11-of-15. The Roadrunners won the rebounding battle, 42-34, and had 17 offensive boards resulting in an 11-2 advantage in second-chance points.
Lanese Bough had eight points and eight rebounds on the day. Felicia Anderson, also a California native, had eight points as well. Madi Robson had eight assists.
The Mavericks now travel to Long Beach to face Long Beach State on Sunday at 4 p.m. (Central).
