OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha baseball team improved to a perfect 9-0 in Summit League play on Friday, defeating North Dakota State, 4-2, at the Ballpark at Boys Town. With the win, the Mavericks are now 15-16 (9-0 Summit League), while the Bison dropped to 15-16 (3-4 Summit League).
Senior Cory Buckley starred offensively, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Senior Tyler Splichal was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and freshman Alex Schultz also had a pair of hits.
Omaha totaled 12 hits on the day to NDSU's nine. The Bison were led by two hits apiece from Wes Satzinger and Kyle Kleinendorst.
Freshman Tyler Fox had his longest outing of the season, throwing 6.1 innings while allowing two runs on seven hits and fanning five with two walks. The loss went to John Straka (5-2), who went 7.0 innings and surrendered three runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Senior Derek Landis earned his fourth save of the year, going 1-2-3 in the ninth inning with a pair of Ks.
North Dakota State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, as Tim Colwell took the second pitch of the game deep to right for his first home run of the season.
Omaha answered immediately in the bottom of the first, stringing together four hits for a pair of runs to take the lead. Bass led off with a single to left, and two batters later, Buckley, senior Ryan Keele and Splichal all added singles of their own. Splichal's hit to right scored junior Brett Bass and tied the game at 1-1, and Buckley then plated the go-ahead run with an RBI groundout from freshman Cole Gruber to make it 2-1.
NDSU made it a one-run ballgame in the seventh, when Leach scored on Satzinger's RBI single to left, pulling it t 3-2.
The Mavericks added an insurance run in the eighth, as Keele led off with a double to center and then scored on Splichal's RBI double down the right field line for the final tally of 4-2.
