Portland State Defeats Mavericks, 6-1

OMAHA, Neb.—The Maverick women's tennis team started its three-match homestand with a 6-1 loss to Portland State on Friday morning at Hanscom Brandeis Tennis Center. With the loss, the Mavs fall to 1-6 (0-0 Summit League), while the Vikings improve to 3-4 (0-0 Big Sky).
Portland State claimed the doubles point to start the day. Omaha picked up their lone doubles win at No. 2 from the duo of freshman Allison Johnson and sophomore Tiffany Hottman. It marked the first time that the pair had ever played together, and they defeated Marina Todd and Sabina-Elena Preda, 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Hylan Miller and Kenzie Hill fought hard but lost the deciding doubles match, 8-7 (7-3).
In singles play, Omaha was able to pick up only one more victory. At No. 1 singles, senior Alex Tran defeated Dane Vorster when Vorster retired down 6-3, 2-1. With the win, Tran improved her record to 4-3 on the season. Also playing well for the Mavs was junior Jacqueline Baude, who lost to Ayaka Terakawa, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Omaha is back in action at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, when it faces off against Kansas Wesleyan.
