Two Shutouts Give Omaha Doubleheader Sweep at NDSU

FARGO, N.D. -- The Omaha baseball team swept a conference doubleheader at North Dakota State on Saturday, 2-0 in 10 innings in the first game and 10-0 in seven innings in the second. The Mavericks improved to 16-12 (5-3 Summit League), while the Bison dropped to 8-15 (0-6 Summit League).
UNO held NDSU to five hits and no runs over the two games, including just one in game two. For their part, the Mavericks pounded out a combined 24 hits in the doubleheader.
The day also marked back-to-back shutouts, which Omaha last achieved on May 4, 2013 against Fort Wayne.
GAME 1 -- OMAHA 2, NORTH DAKOTA STATE 0 (10 INN.)
Sophomore Tyler Fox (5-1) earned his league-leading fifth win of the year, throwing a season-long 9.0 innings. The Thornton, Colo., native limited NDSU to four hits while striking out eight with no walks. Trevor Jaunich (1-2) took the loss, giving up both Maverick runs on three hits in the final two innings. Senior Anthony Falcone (2) got his second save of the season with one final inning of work with no hits and a strikeout.
Omaha produced the only two runs of the game in the top of the 10th. Sophomore Clayton Taylor led off the inning with a double to right and senior Brett Bass was hit by a pitch to put two on. Senior Caleb Palensky's sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position, and senior Tyler Splichal was intentionally walked to load the bases. Junior Daniel Jewett then came up with the game-winning two-run single to give UNO all the 2-0 lead it needed for the win.
GAME 2 -- OMAHA 10, NORTH DAKOTA STATE 0 (7 INN.)
Pitching was the key again in game two, as senior Steven Schoonover (1-1) threw a complete-game one-hit shutout for the win. Schoonover struck out three and walked one for the day. NDSU starter Trent Keefer (3-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits over 2.0 innings.
The Mavericks supported Schoonover offensively, putting together 10 runs with 14 hits and two NDSU errors. Omaha jumped out early, putting up four runs in the top of the first inning. The Mavericks added another in the second and four more in the fourth, then tacked on one final run in the seventh.
The Bison managed just one hit, a single in the fifth.
Redshirt freshman Danny Suiter led Omaha with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with a run scored. Sophomore Cole Gruber finished 2-for-5 with two runs, and Palensky was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
