Mavericks Knock Off Iowa State in Exhibition, 2-1

AMES, Iowa - The Omaha women's soccer team began its final season of transition to Division I with a tone-setting 2-1 win over Iowa State on Friday night, even if it was just an exhibition match.
The Mavericks got a first-half goal from Ava Doetsch and the game-winner from Courtney Neville in the 60th minute to knock off the Cyclones, who were 9-9-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the Big 12 last season and return 18 letterwinners.
Just two years after Iowa State blanked UNO 4-0 and outshot the Mavs 18-1 at the UNO Soccer Field, the Mavericks flipped the script on the Cyclones' home field in 2014.
Doetsch, a forward last season but trying her hand at center back as a sophomore, made a 35-yard run up the field before firing home from 15 yards out to put the Mavs up 1-0 at the 17:20 mark. But Iowa State evened it up just 1:05 later when Maribell Morales pounced on a ball that was bobbled by UNO goalie Meaghan Clark.
However, in the 60th minute Chelsi Rohloff fed Neville on the left side of the box, and Neville put home the game-winner from 10 yards out.
ISU finished with an 11-8 shot advantage, but shots on goal were even at 3-3 and five of the Cyclones' shots came in the final 11 minutes as they pressed for the equalizer.
Freshman Katlyn Schochenmaier played the second half in goal for the Mavs and didn't allow a goal in her 45 minutes, making two saves in the final 10 minutes to preserve the lead.
The Mavericks played the match without All-Summit League defender Hannah Wampler, but Morgan Westenburg played all 90 minutes after missing all of last season with a knee injury.
