DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Omaha women's tennis team kicked off its fall competition last weekend, traveling to the Drake Fall Invitational.
Freshman Michelle Lo won the "A" flight in singles action. She opened with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jieke Stroobant of Northern Iowa, followed by a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Northern Colorado's Chrissie Hoolahan. She then defeated Creighton's Jennie Hartjes, 6-1, 6-2, before a final win over Northern Iowa's Astrid Santos.
Sophomore Hylan Miller qualified for the "A" flight consolation finals. She began with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Alysa Straub of Milwaukee, then dropped Creighton's Katherine Nelsen, 7-5, 6-4, before falling to Northern Iowa's Jieke Stroobant, 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Jacqueline Baude also earned a spot in the "C" flight consolation finals, starting with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kelly Jachymowski (Upper Iowa). She followed up with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Northern Iowa's Sydeny Wolfe before dropping a 6-4, 5-7, 4-10 loss to Aerielle Pendleton of Milwaukee in the finals.
In doubles action, Miller and Baude teamed up to win the "A" flight consolation finals. They secured an 8-5 win over Colorado's San Anderson and Amanda Noonan, then defeated North Dakota's Sophie Allen-Fisher and Callie Ronkowski, 8-7(5), in the finals.
"I am extremely happy with how our athletes performed this weekend," head coach Mike Saniuk said. "They put their heads down and went to work. Seeing them play this well, especially on Sunday, shows how far we have come as a program in the last year. That is something we are very excited about, but we know there is more work ahead of us."
