Men's Tennis Tested at Bluejay Invitational

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha men's tennis gained some valuable experience over the past three days at the Bluejay Invitational in Omaha.
"We had a tough weekend but now we know exactly what we need to work on to improve," commented Head Coach Tyson Thomas. "I saw some flashes of brilliance from the freshmen this weekend. Now the challenge is to turn those flashes into the norm."
Freshman Alex Woodward placed fourth in the "C" Flight singles draw. Woodward opened with a split set win over Ty Misialey from North Dakota, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4). He then lost a split set match to Creighton's Harrison Lang, 7-6, 3-6, 0-6, before dropping a straight set decision to UMKC's Vihn Pham.
Freshman Sean Padios placed fourth in the "F" Flight singles draw. Padios knocked off Eshan Varma of North Dakota in split sets, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-5. He dropped straight set matches to Creighton's Anthony Rauschenbach and Northern Colorado's Jake Sheldon.
Freshman Matt Dunn went 1-2 on the weekend in the "B" Flight singles draw. Dunn defeated Jack Desse of SIU-E in split sets, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (8). Freshman Bryce Medhi went 1-2 in the "G" Flight Singles draw with a split set victory over Creighton's Marko Vukalovic. Junior Lukas Vanzura went 1-2 on the weekend with a straight set win over Varma.
In doubles action, two Omaha teams picked up wins in the "C" Flight draw. The tandem of Erik Anderson and Ignace Warson went 1-2 over the weekend, including an 8-6 win over Jonny Highham and Elliot Ward of South Dakota State. Padios and Vanzura teamed up and went 1-2 with an 8-2 win over SDSU's Stefano Blatt and Marco Paulo Castro.
"I believe in the talent and resolve that we have on this team," said Thomas. "We know that we need to put in some work, but the guys are focused and excited to make those improvements."
The Mavericks return to action next weekend at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Omaha opens its regular season Saturday, Jan. 16 at North Dakota.
