Mavericks Successful at Bluejay Invitational

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha women's tennis team continued its fall slate over the weekend, playing at the Bluejay Invitational at Koch Tennis Center. The weekend was highlighted with freshman Janelle Wilson and senior Molly Matricardi winning their flights in B and C singles, respectively.
In Flight A singles, sophomore Michelle Lo won her first match, defeating Creighton's Michaela Henne 6-1, 6-1. Later in Flight A, junior Hylan Miller picked up a win over GAU's Michaela Schultz, 6-4, 6-3.
Wilson starred in Flight B singles, winning all three of her matches. She dropped Sid Dirks of Gustavus Adolphus (6-2, 6-0), Emma Kranendonk of South Dakota (6-2, 6-1) and Katherine Nelsen of Creighton (7-5, 6-1). In addition to Wilson's trio of wins, the flight included two victories for freshman Kylie Boyer, who rallied past North Dakota's Mimi Yunker, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. Boyer added a marathon victory over Kranendonk, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6.
Flight C included three triumphs for Matricardi, who outlasted CU's Ashley Monaco (3-6, 6-2, 6-0) and topped USD's Mili Pavlovic (6-1, 6-3) and CU's Sam Anderson (7-5, 6-4). Senior Maddie Holscher also recorded two wins, 6-4, 6-4 over Maddie Comeau and 6-4, 6-2 over Shelby Zilmer, both of North Dakota. Junior Kenzie Hill defeated UND's Mary Wessman (6-1, 6-4) and Monaco (3-6, 6-1, 11-9). Freshman Hannah Hills pulled out a victory over Caitlin Steffen of Gustavus Adolphus (6-2, 4-6, 6-4), as did junior Allison Johnson over GAU's Taylor Shortly (6-1, 6-7, (10-3)) and freshman Hannah Hills over Cal Carlson (7-5, 6-4).
On the doubles side, Lo and Miller were dominant in their Flight A slate. The duo defeated GAU's Schultz and Ally Baker (8-3), Creighton's Henne and Nelsen (8-2) and North Dakota's Yunker and Lacey Sprinkel (8-4). Matricardi and Boyer also teamed up in Flight A action, earning a win over Kranendonk and Pavlovic of South Dakota (8-3), then another over Sprinkel and Yunker (8-4).
In Flight B doubles, Wilson and Johnson parsed together another 3-0 performance. The pair defeated Shortly and Lilly Hartmann of Gustavus Adolphus (8-2), Monaco and Karlin Naslund of Creighton (8-4) and Dirks and Brianna Hartmann of GAU (8-2). Hill and Hills also dispatched UND's Aliza Deming and Courtney Brackin (8-7).
"We had a great weekend of tennis," head coach Mike Saniuk said. "I saw a lot of growth in our players this weekend. Doubles, in particular, was encouraging, as it was the first time each of the pairings had played together. We had two teams make it to the finals and another team finish 2-1.
"Singles was another success with Janelle and Molly going 3-0 to win their flights. Kylie, Kenzie and Maddie also went 2-1, which was great to see."
Omaha returns to action Oct. 14-19, concluding its fall season with seven players competing at ITA Regionals in Stillwater, Okla.
