Omaha Set For Weekend Matchups With Northern Illinois, Chicago State

OMAHA, Neb. – • The Maverick baseball program heads to Marion, Ill., for a four-game stretch with a pair of matchup against Northern Illinois and Chicago State.
QUICK HITS
• The Mavericks battle Northern Illinois for the first time in program history this Friday at 2:30 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. showdown the next day in the first game of a Saturday twinbill.
• Omaha takes on Chicago State at 2:30 on Saturday following the game with NIU. The Mavericks then close out the weekend with a Sunday matchup against the Cougars at 11 a.m.
• Omaha heads into the weekend 4-3 overall after the team went 2-2 last week at the Snowbird Classic.
• Through two weeks of the opening season, Omaha has a trio of players hitting above the .300 clip in Keil Krumwiede (.357), Parker Smejkal (.333) and Chris Esposito (.333).
LAST TIME OUT
Omaha finished 2-2 at the Snowbird Classic Feb. 20-23 over the four-game stretch. In that tournament, the Maveicks fell 3-1 the first day against Indiana State, but bounced back with a 2-0 win over Chicago State on day two.
The Mavericks avenged their Thursday loss to Indiana State and picked up a 3-2 win over the Sycamores Saturday afternoon. On the last day, Omaha dropped an 8-1 result to Dartmouth behind a quartet of hits.
LAST MEETING WITH CHICAGO STATE
Omaha baseball notched its third win of the season behind a 2-0 shutout victory over Chicago State on the second day of the Snowbird Classic.
Superb pitching led the way for Omaha through nine combined innings of shutout ball from Joey Machado, Tanner Howe and Jacob Mohler. Machado earned his first win of the season (1-0) with 6.0 innings pitched, three strikeouts, five hits and no runs allowed. Howe tossed two shutout innings in the seventh and eighth, followed by Mohler who earned his second save of the year.
MOHLER EMERGES AS THE CLOSER
Through two weekends, senior Jacob Mohler has three saves in as many mound appearances this season.
The Cedar Creek, Neb., native has entered in the ninth for all three of his games and has not allowed a hit or a run yet. Through his three innings of work, Mohler has two strikeouts with no walks allowed.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Mavericks are slated for their home debut this season at Seymour Smith Park with a Friday, March 6, doubleheader beginning at Noon against Portland.
