Mavs Meet Fort Hays in Dual Tourney 1st Round
The Mavericks will meet Fort Hays State in the opening round as they try to defend their title in the National Dual Meet Tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Saturday and Sunday. The Mavs are the No. 1 seed and will meet Fort Hays State in the first match and if they win will meet the winner of No. 8 seeded Augustana and Gannon at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The schedule for the championship bracket:
Saturday: 9 a.m. vs. Fort Hays State
Quarterfinals, 1 p.m.
Sunday: Semifinals, 11 a.m.
Championship, 3 p.m.
Consolation bracket:
Prelim, Saturday, 1 p.m.; second round 5 p.m., third round 7 p.m. Sunday, seventh-place match at 9 a.m.; fifth-place match at 1 p.m.

The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 27th season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 252-101-5 career mark. He has twice been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year and led the 1991, 2004 and 2005 Mavericks to NCAA II national championships.

Junior Ben Strandberg has transferred from UNO to attend school elsewhere...true freshman Jacob Marrs was expected to fill his spot, however, he was injured in practice, so Nick Edmonds will fill his spot at 197...freshman Ross Taplin will wrestle at 165 pounds, while two-time All-American J.D. Naid will move from 165 to 174 pounds....injuries will keep freshmen Bryce Boehm (184) and Frank Hebert (heavyweight) on the sidelines for the season...UNO is 32-9 all-time in the Dual Meet Tournament, with titles in 1997 and 2005.

UNO will host the Brand Open on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. About 120 wrestlers are expected to compete in the meet, which will get underway at 9 a.m.
