Mavs Tied For 20th at Midlands Tournament
CHICAGO, Ill. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team is tied for 20th place after the first day of competition at the presigious Midlands Tournament held at Northwestern University's Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Mavericks have two wrestlers who remain in the competition after day one.
The tournament, started by former Wildcat coach and administrator Ken Kraft, is annually hosted by Northwestern and attracts the best amateur wrestling has to offer.
Sophomore Ross Taplin (165 pounds) went 2-1 in the first day of competition advancing to the championship quarterfinals before falling into the consolation bracket. Taplin, the tournament's eighth seed, defeated Billy Gallo of Eastern Illinois in a fall (1:33)and Jason Martin of Purdue, 7-0. In the quarterfinals, Taplin lost to Mark Perry of Iowa, 11-1 He will wrestle at noon on Saturday against Tim Palmer of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in the wrestlebacks.
Sophomore Cody Garcia (125 pounds) pinned his first opponent, Trevor Charbonneau of Nebraska-Kearney, in 2:12, before defaulting his next two matches due to an injury.
After receiving a first round bye, senior JD Naig (174 pounds) suffered a 3-2 loss to Chad Beatty of Iowa. Naig rebounded with a 7-3 win over Kenny Robertson of Eastern Illinois, a 5-1 victory over John Murphy of Michigan State, a 6-5 win over Tommy Clark of West Liberty State and a 6-4 decision over Nick Hayes of Northwestern. Naig, the No. 8 seed, will battle Kurt Brenner of West Virginia at noon on Saturday in the wrestlebacks.
Redshirt freshman Jacob Marrs (197 pounds) pinned Sean Evans of Harper in 4:59, before suffering a 10-2 loss to fifth-seeded Kurt Backes of Iowa State. Marrs won by forfeit over Dan Erekson of Iowa and was eliminated by a 10-5 loss to Nate Everhart of Indiana.
The tournament will conclude through tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 30.
