Maverick QBs on Target in Scrimmage
Three Maverick quarterbacks threw for touchdowns, with two of them going to Mike Higgins, to highlight UNO's first full spring scrimmage at Caniglia Field.
Higgins, a redshirt freshman tight end from Pickrell, Neb., caught a 91-yard toss from sophomore Greg Wunderlich and a five-yard pass from redshirt freshman Brian Gralheer.
The 75-minute scrimmage included 69 offensive plays and 385 yards in total offense.
Wunderlich completed 4 of 8 passes for 123 yards, Gralheer 7 of 12 for 102 yards and senior Zach Miller, last year's starting quarterback, 5 of 7 for 51 yards. A total of 11 receivers caught passes.
Miller threw an eight-yard touchdown strike to junior wide receiver Troy Kush for the other touchdown Saturday.
Sophomore tailback David Armstrong of Baton Rouge, La., led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 32 yards.
Higgins' first touchdown was also the first of the day. Wunderlich, on third down from the nine, scrambled out of the pocket and found Higgins at the 35-yard line, five yards behind the defense.
Redshirt freshman placekicker Greg Zuerlein of Lincoln, Neb., kicked three PATs and added a 25-yard field goal.
Defensively, redshirt freshman Travis Jacobi of Elkhorn blocked a field goal attempt and junior cornerback Reed Taylor accounted for the only interception.
