Mavs Fall to UND in Conference Opener

GRAND FORKS, N.D.- Two first half goals up the middle were enough for No. 19 North Dakota to defeat top-ranked UNO 2-0 Saturday afternoon in the first day on conference play for both teams. The Mavs were shut out consecutively for the first time and have scored only once in the last three games. UNO dropped to 9-1-1 (0-1 NCC) and the Sioux stayed perfect at 10-0-0 (1-0 NCC) after beating the Mavs for the first time in six games.
North Central Conference leading scorer Stephanie Pfeiffer put in her 16th at 32:11 when she took a pass up the middle from Dana Parry and drove it under sophomore goalkeeper Amy Price. UND's second goal came nine minutes later when Meghan Mutrie took a pass from Christine Lapp and put it in to close out the scoring. Pfeiffer had two earlier chances but junior Rachel Tushner kicked the first one off the line and the second one skimmed off the crossbar on a breakaway.
The Mavs took twelve second-half shots after UND dropped its defense back but failed to create a threat. Keeper Eve Compton made seven saves including two big ones when freshman Haley Fries' shot was blocked and junior Ashley Grace missed the rebound in the last 20 minutes. UNO's final chance came in the last five minutes when Grace's shot went wide.
The Mavs will continue conference play Sunday when North Dakota State hosts them at 1 p.m.
Note: Sophomore defender Meghan Pile played in her first game of the year Saturday, starting and playing most of the first half and all of the second half. Freshman Megan Herzberg had been playing in Pile's spot on defense but moved up to forward where she took four shots and put two on goal.
