Mavericks To Battle in Two Exhibitions

University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball fans will get their first change to see the 2003 Mavericks in action when they host two exhibition matches this week.
The Mavericks will hold their annual Red-Black Scrimmage on Tuesday, August 19, at 6 p.m at Marian High School on 75th and Military Streets. UNO will be divided into two squads and will play five games. The scrimmage has been moved from the Mavericks' normal venue, the Sapp Fieldhouse, due to the completion of construction of chair-back bleachers on the north side of the Fieldhouse.
Nebraska-Omaha will play an exhibition match with its almuni team on Saturday, August 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse. Former Maverick All-Americans Amy Steffel, Erin Shafer-Siebler, Denise Otten, Ruth Evans, Tanya Cate, and Nikki Mastny will all be competing for the alumni team.
Admission is free to the public for both the Red-Black Scrimmage and the Alumni Match.
The 2003 version of the UNO Mavericks will feature the return of five starters and 11 letterwinners from last season's 14-17 squad. In addition, four newcomers will don Maverick uniforms for the first time.
The Record:
The UNO Mavericks finished the 2002 season with a 14-17 overall record and a 4-12 conference mark. The Mavericks more than doubled their previous year's when UNO finished 6-21.
Head Coach Rose Shires:
Rose Shires begins her 14th season as the UNO head volleyball coach with an overall record of 284-146 (.660). She is the second winningest coach in UNO volleyaball history, both in terms of victories and winning percentage. Shires led the Mavericks to the 1996 national championship, earning 1996 NCAA II National Coach of the Year honors as well as co-NCC Coach of the Year accolades. Shires has led the Mavericks to the NCAA Tournament in four out of the last seven seasons.
