BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Senior guard Ty Graham scored 14 of his 24 points in the final 31 seconds of regulation and overtime to lift the Mavericks to a 107-104 upset of No. 3 South Dakota State Saturday night.
The Mavericks came from 16 points down the second half to end the Jackrabbits' 27-game winning streak at Frost Arena and improve to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the North Central Conference. The Jackrabbits, who had gone nearly three full years since suffering a home court loss in the NCC, fell to 17-1 and 1-1.
UNO battled from as many as 11 points down the first half to trail at the break 39-36, but the Jackrabbits scored the first six points in building a 19-6 run to take a 58-42 lead six minutes into the second half.
Ryan Curtis scored two field goals and added a free throw and Chris DeSpain dunked to cap a 7-0 run that brought UNO back to within four with 9:29 left, 63-59.
The Jackrabbits scrambled back up by eight three more times, but the Mavs kept chipping away and tied the game at 79 on Tola Dada's three-pointer with 2:37 left. UNO tied the game three more times before Graham gave the Mavs their first lead of the game with a three-pointer with 31 seconds left. He added a pair of free shots with 13 seconds left for an 88-85 edge.
SDSU got a chance to keep its winning streak intact when Marquise Richardson gunned down a three-pointer with seven seconds left to force overtime.
UNO never trailed in the extra session, scoring on all 10 of its possessions. After Richardson tied the game with a short jumper at 90, Dada made two free throws for a 92-90 lead.
Dada appeared to have the game iced when he hit two more from the line for a 105-98 lead with 24 seconds left, but Richardson again rode to the rescue, hitting a three-pointer and drawing a foul to get a free throw. The four-point play with 16 seconds left pulled the Jacks within three, 105-102.
After Dada made one of two free shots with 14 seconds left, SDSU's Jared DeJong hit a layup with three seconds remaining to pull the Jacks within two, 106-104. Dada then hit another free throw with less than two seconds left.
Dada added 23 points and Curtis had 14 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Calvin Kapels added 11 points and six assists.
The Mavs, who shot 53 percent from the floor to SDSU's 50 percent, were out-rebounded by SDSU, 45-28. The Mavericks scored on 20 of their last 21 possessions, including all 10 in overtime.
Richardson scored 26 points, DeJong had 25 and 10 rebounds and Andy Moeller added 20 points.
It was the second time in two years the Mavs have ended a long home-court win streak. UNO ended North Dakota's 22-game home streak last year in the first round of the NCC tournament.
UNO is next in action Friday night at North Dakota State.
