Mavericks Upset No. 6 Minnesota Duluth

Omaha, Neb. -- Five Mavericks recorded double-figures in kills as the Univesity of Nebraska at Omaha upset No. 6-ranked Minnesota-Duluth 3-1 (30-28, 24-30, 30-28, 30-27) in North Central Conference volleyball action Friday night before 891 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks handed UMD their first conference loss, dropping the Bulldogs to 17-3 overall and 5-1 in the NCC. UNO improved to 14-6 and 5-2.
Nebraska-Omaha was led by the 22-kill, 21-dig performance of senior outside hitter Amy McLeay. Junior setter Christie Johnson distributed a very balanced offense, finishing the match with 60 assists, nine digs, five blocks, and four kills.
Joining McLeay in double-figures was junior Ashley Freeman (14), senior Jenny Rankin (10), freshman Carlie Christensen (10), and junior Heather Hainline (10). UNO recorded 74 kills in the match and outhit Minnesota-Duluth, the league's top hitting team, .233 to .205.
Besides McLeay, the Mavericks had two other players with 20-or more digs, including senior Julia McConahay with a team-high 22 and junior Chelsea Miller with 20.
The Mavericks dominated at the net defensively, recording a season-high 30 blocks, compared to just 13 for Minnesota Duluth.
Minnesota Duluth was led by senior outside hitter Callie Zwettler who tallied 21 kills and 16 digs. Defensively, the Bulldogs were paced by libero Allison Boddy, who registered a match-high 31 digs.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday night, Oct. 23, when they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., for a 7 p.m. match with No. 21-ranked Augustana.
