Abdul Mills and a perfect performance by Ryan Curtis led the Mavericks to their fifth straight victory Tuesday night. Mills scored 25 points and Curtis tied a school mark, going 9-for-9 from the field for 23 points in an 81-73 win over Wayne State.
Curtis, a junior forward from Omaha, also hit all five of his free shots as the No. 21 Mavericks improved to 8-1 on the season. Wayne State fell to 2-4.
UNO pulled away from the Wildcats in the closing minutes of the first half after falling behind 23-19. Curtis hit three of his seven first-half field goals in the final 6:40 to pull the Mavericks into a 40-33 lead at the break.
Mills connected on a three pointer, the first of his 14 second-half points, to give UNO its first double digit lead, 45-35, less than three minutes into the second half. The Maverick lead grew to as much as 16 on freshman Denny Johnston's three-pointer midway through the half, 59-43.
The Wildcats whittled away at the lead, pulling to within 65-59 on Brett Cain's layup with 4:15 to play, but the Mavs held the line from that point. Curtis hit a layup, was fouled and knocked down the free shot and Mills hit six of eight free throws in the final three minutes to maintain the advantage.
Jamaal Byers and Andre Tarpley each hit two free shots in the closing half-minute to ice the win.
Curtis, who also hauled down nine rebounds, tied the UNO record for shooting percentage in a game. Sven Bonde also hit 9-of-9 from the field in 1991 against Northern Colorado.
Calvin Kapels had 12 points and added six assists for the Mavericks.
Cain led Wayne State with 19 points, Brett Watson added 18, Todd Klosterman 14 and Dusty Smith 12.
The Mavericks return to action against Missouri Western at Sapp Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon at 4.
