Mavericks Head to California For Three Matches

The University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team, currently 4-1 on the season, will travel to California this week for three matches including a showdown at No. 7-ranked Cal State-San Bernardino, a 2003 NCAA II semifinalist.
The Mavericks begin the week with a 2 p.m. match on Thursday, Sept. 2 at California State-Los Angeles. Nebraska-Omaha will then travel to San Bernardino, Calif. on Saturday, Sept. 4 for a 12:30 p.m. match against Sonoma State before concluding the trip with a 7:30 p.m. battle with host Cal State-San Bernardino.
The Record
The Mavericks won four of five matches at the season-opening North Alabama Classic last weekend in Florence, Ala. including five-game victories over No. 10-ranked Grand Valley State and No. 22-ranked Pittsburg State, as well as three-game sweeps over Southern Arkansas and Hillsdale. The Mavericks opened the season with a four-game loss to host North Alabama, the defending national champion. UNO is 4-1 on the season and has won four-consecutive matches.
UNA Classic All-Tournament Team
Senior outside hitter Amy McLeay was named MVP of the North Alabama Classic. McLeay recorded 75 kills in the five tournament matches, including a career-tying 24 in the Mavericks five-game upset over No. 22 Pittsburg State. Junior setter Christie Johnson was also named to the all-tournament team. Johnson averaged 11.30 assists per game, while recording nine service aces and 28 digs.
Shires Earns 300th Career Victory
Rose Shires picked up her 300th career victory as the Mavericks swept Hillsdale 3-0 (30-17, 31-29, 30-25) on Sept. 28 at the North Alabama Classic. Shires has amassed a 300-165 (. 645) career record in her 15th season as the Mavericks' mentor. Shires, the 1996 AVCA Division II national coach of the year, is the second winningest coach in the school's history behind Janice Kruger who recorded a 352-96 mark in her nine Maverick seasons from 1979-87.
