2004 Volleyball Preview I: The Schedule

The University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team, which faces what is perhaps the toughest schedule in the nation in 2004, including no home matches until October, will give the public and the media two chances to see the squad in acton prior to the official start of this year's campaign.
The Mavericks, who return four starters and 10 letterwinners from last season's 12-18 squad, will hold their annual Red-Black Intrasquad Scrimmage on Tuesday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. Nebraska-Omaha will host the UNO Alumni in an exhibition beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21. Both events will take place at UNO's Sapp Fieldhouse.
Head coach Rose Shires, who will be entering her 15th Maverick season, has devised a 2004 schedule that will include at least 13 matches against nine different teams that qualified for the 2003 NCAA Division II Tournament. In fact, Nebraska-Omaha will meet three of the four participants in last season's NCAA II Final Four, including defending national champion North Alabama, during the first two weeks of the 2004 season.
The Mavericks will open the season in Florence, Ala. at the North Alabama Volleyball Classic. Nebraska-Omaha's first match of the year will be against 2003 national champion North Alabama. The Mavericks will face 2003 NCAA II semifinalist Grand Valley State and 2003 NCAA tournament-qualifier Pittsburg State in their second and third matches of the year.
It will not get any easier in the Mavericks' second week of competition when they travel to California for three matches including a contest at 2003 NCAA II semifinalist Cal State-San Bernardino.
Seven opponents on the 2004 schedule were ranked in the top 20 in the final 2003 AVCA Division II poll, including North Alabama (No. 1), Cal State-San Bernardino (No. 3), Grand Valley State (No. 5), Nebraska-Kearney (No. 7), Augustana (No. 14), Minnesota-Duluth (No. 17), and Minnesota State, Mankato (No. 20).
With the departure of traditional conference powers North Dakota State and South Dakota State from the NCC, the Mavericks will add several additional non-conference opponents to the schedule, in addition to perennial power Minnesota-Duluth, who joined the NCC this season.
The Mavericks will face three new opponents for the first time in school history, including Southern Arkansas, Hillsdale, and Cal State-San Bernardino.
