Mavs Pick Up Road Win at Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Outside hitters Christina Reicks and Ashley Freeman combined for 24 kills as the University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (32-30, 30-26, 30-28) non-conference road victory Tuesday night before 397 fans at Bearcat Arena. With the win, Nebraska-Omaha (12-4) extended its winning streak to eight matches.
Reicks led the Mavericks with 13 kills and seven digs. Freeman added 11 kills and five digs. Sophomore middle blocker Carlie Christensen hit a match-high .444 with nine kills, one error, in 18 attempts, while adding five blocks.
The Mavericks were led defensively by senior libero Chelsea Miller's 13 digs. Senior setter Christie Johnson collected 34 assists, five digs, and two kills, including the match winner.
In the first game, UNO trailed by as many as five points twice, including at 23-18. The Bearcats led 27-25, but the Mavericks stormed back with three-straight points on a Freeman kill, a service ace by Stacie Wemhoff, and an attack error by the Bearcats' Rachel Spensley. NWMSU then scored two-consecutive points on two attack errors by Reicks. The Bearcats held game point at 30-29, but a service error by Spensley knotted the game at 30. Reicks ended the first game on a kill as UNO pulled out a 32-30 win.
UNO trailed 17-10 in the second game, before winning nine of the next 11 points to tie the game at 19-19. With the score tied at 23, the Mavs reeled off four-straight points and held on to the advantage for a 30-26 win. UNO hit .368 in the second game, paced by Christensen's five kills on seven attempts with no errors.
The third game saw Northwest Missouri save six match points as UNO led 29-22. The Bearcats closed the gap to 29-28 thanks to six Maverick errors. Johnson finally ended the game and the match on a setter attack kill.
NWMSU actually outhit the Mavericks .202 to .185 for the match. UNO held a slight 39 to 36 advantage in digs and a 15 to nine edge in total blocks.
Nebraska-Omaha will resume conference action on Saturday, Oct. 8, when they travel to Vermillion, S.D. for an 8 p.m. match with South Dakota
