Mavs Earn No. 3 Seed for Volleyball Regional

For the second-straight season and the seventh-time in the Rose Shires' era, the University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team has received an invitation to the NCAA II Tournament. The Mavericks will enter the North Central Regional as the tournament's No. 3 seed and will play sixth-seeded Wayne State (Neb.) in the tournament's first match on Thursday, Nov. 17, beginning at 12 p.m.
Concordia-St. Paul earned the top seed and will host the tournament for the third-straight season. The Golden Bears received a first round bye.
It marks the 15th time in school history that the Mavericks have qualified for the NCAA II Tournament. The winner of the North Central Regional will advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight on December 1-3 on the campus of one of the participating teams.

The Record
UNO is currently 19-7 overall on the season. The Mavericks finished in second place in the NCC standings with a 10-2 league record after splitting a pair of road matches last weekend, falling in four games to league champion Minnesota Duluth, before rebounding with a three-game sweep at Minnesota State to close the regular season.
The Mavericks, who have won 15 out of their last 18 matches, are ranked No. 23 in the latest AVCA top 25 poll. UNO is making its second-consecutive NCAA post-season appearance and their seventh NCAA Tournament in the Rose Shires' era.

Trio Named to NCC Academic Squad
Seniors Christie Johnson and Ashley Freeman and junior Christina Reicks were named to the 2005 academic all-North Central Conference volleyball team in a vote by league sports information directors. The three selections were the most by any conference team. Augustana and Minnesota Duluth had two honorees each.
Johnson (Lincoln, Neb.), who is a two-time selection on the 11-member squad, holds a 3.796 cumulative GPA in exercise science. Freeman (Council Bluffs, Iowa) has a 3.587 GPA in exercise science. Reicks (Bellevue, Neb.), has a 3.858 GPA in elementary education.

Senior setter Christy Johnson and junior outside hitter Christina Reicks have been named to the 2005 CoSida Academic All-District VII (College Division) third team by a vote of sports information directors. Johnson carries a 3.796 cumulative GPA in exercise science. Reicks maintains a 3.858 GPA in elementary education.
College Division is for all institutions not in NCAA Division I. District VII includes all schools located in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve with a minimum cululative GPA of 3.20.
Four Mavs Named to All-NCC Team; Shires Coach of the Year
Four Mavericks were named to the 2005 all-North Central Conference volleyball first team in a vote by league coaches, while head coach Rose Shires was tabbed the NCC coach of the year for the second time in her career. Senior setter Christie Johnson was named to the first team for the second-straight season. Also earning first team honors were sophomore middle blocker Carlie Christensen, senior outside hitter Ashley Freeman, and junior outside hitter Christina Reicks. The four members are the most UNO has placed on the all-conference team since the 1996 season when UNO claimed the national championship.
Johnson ranked second in the NCC in set assists (13.48 apg) and ninth in service aces (0.28 sapg). She currently ranks sixth on the Maverick career records chart with 2,944 career assists. Johnson was named NCC setter of the week two times during the season and five times throughout her career.
Christensen leads the 2005 Mavericks with a .327 hitting percentage and 1.25 blocks per game. She ranked 3rd in the NCC in blocks (1.27 bpg) and 3rd in hitting percentage (.318). Christesnen has recorded double-figure kills in 15 matches this season.
Reicks earned NCC player of the week honors twice this season. She has recorded a team-high eight double-doubles and has 18 matches with double-figure kills. Reicks ranked first in the NCC in service aces (0.50 sapg), and tied for 6th in kills (3.70 kpg).
