NCAA Regional Kicks Off Friday for Mavericks

The No. 7 Mavericks will get a chance to rematch with North Dakota as they host the NCAA Central Region tournament this weekend at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben in an all North Central Conference affair. Top-seeded Nebraska-Omaha and No. 4 UND (12-4-1) will play at 2:30 p.m. Friday and No. 3 South Dakota (14-5-1) and No. 2 Minnesota State (10-8-1) will play at noon. The two winners will meet Sunday at noon for the right to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Mavericks have been the wire-to-wire No. 1 team in the NCAA's regional poll, having only lost once in the region. North Dakota handed the Mavs that loss and the two split the season series. UNO holds a 7-4-0 record in the overall series against the Sioux. The Mavs defeated Minnesota State twice this year and hold a 12-1-0 record in the all-time series, including a win in the 2003 regional final. UNO also swept South Dakota this year and holds an 8-0-0 all-time record against the Coyotes. The Mavericks are 27-5-0 all-time against the field.

The Mavericks wrapped up the regular season Sunday with a 2-1 win over Minnesota State, giving UNO its second straight North Central Conference championship and fifth overall. Beth McGill got the Mavs on the board in the second on a penalty kick and then Amanda Iwansky scored the game-winner as the Mavs came back from a 1-0 deficit at halftime. UNO also got a 3-0 win Saturday at Minnesota Duluth. The Mavs got an own goal and then tallied scores from Iwansky and Ali Portell.
Quarterfinals coming up next week
The winner of the Central Region tournament will host the winner of the Great Lakes Region tournament November 19 or 20. Northern Kentucky earned the top seed in the Great Lakes Region and will play Wheeling Jesuit. SIU-Edwardsville and Grand Valley State will also play in that region's first round. The Mavericks have faced the NKU Norse twice in quarterfinal play and advanced both times.

The Mavericks return to the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben where they went 5-1-0 this year and allowed just two goals. UNO averaged 3.50 goals per game while allowing just 0.33. The offense averaged 12.5 shots on goal per game while the defense kept opponents to just 2.7. Four of the Maverick wins came in shutouts. Beth McGill and Brandie Beale each scored 14 points at Ak-Sar-Ben and McGill notched three game-winners. The Mavericks are undefeated (4-0-0) in NCAA tournament play at home.

UNO remained in the top-10 of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll for the eighth straight week with a No. 7 ranking. The Mavs have been ranked as high as fourth and as low as 22nd this year and have been nationally ranked for the last 20 weeks by the NSCAA. UNO is also the No. 1 team in the NSCAA's regional poll.
The Mavericks are 3-1-0 this year against nationally-ranked teams with two wins against MSU and one over North Dakota. The loss came to tournament participant Central Oklahoma. MSU, the only other nationally-ranked team in the NCAA Central Region tournament, dropped to 24th nationally.
About the Sioux
North Dakota begins its second NCAA tournament as the only team in the region to have beaten UNO this year. The Sioux split the two-game series with the Mavs and finished 12-4-1 and third in the NCC at 7-4-1. UND is also the only NCC school to have beaten UNO goalkeeper Amy Price in her career. Leading UND in scoring this year is Jenna Barr with 30 points off 12 goals and six assists. That total is the third highest in the conference. Meghan Mutrie is eighth in the NCC with 17 points off six goals and five assists. The Mavericks were able to shut down Barr and Mutrie, allowing them to combine for just eight shots and no goals in the two games. Goalkeeper Ashley Rohwer is second in the league behind UNO's Amy Price, with a 0.79 goals against average. She leads all NCC keepers with an .884 save percentage. Rohwer played once this year against the Mavs and earned a shutout, stopping 10 shots.
About the Coyotes
South Dakota enters its second straight NCAA tournament with a 14-5-1 record and a fourth-place 7-4-1 mark in NCC play. The Coyotes have been undefeated in their last six games since losing to the Mavs. Ashley Ervin leads the NCC with 33 points off 14 goals and five assists and Sarah Halbach is third in the league with 19 points. Ervin was kept without a shot in two losses against UNO this year while Halbach scored once. Goalkeeper Keyton Wheelock is third in the NCC with a 0.97 goals against average.
About the MSU Mavericks
Minnesota State (10-8-1) finished second in the NCC at 9-2-1 and played in-region opponents to a 10-4-1 record. The Mavericks opened the season by losing their first five and then going undefeated in their next 10. UNO snapped that winning streak and then defeated MSU to close out the regular season. The Mavericks are led in scoring by Carly Petersen with 13 points off six goals and an assist. Goalkeeper Jennie Dehamer is allowing 1.58 goals per game and despite their winning record, the Mavericks have let in more goals than they have scored.
Nebraska-Omaha dominates NCC in scoring and defense
Junior forward Beth McGill leads the NCC with 1.88 points per game and 0.76 goals per game. She is also fourth with six assists and second with 64 shots. Sophomore forward Brandie Beale is fourth in the league with 27 points and 11 goals. Beale and McGill are tied for second in the NCC with four game-winners each. Beale leads the NCC with 71 shots.
Both Beale and McGill have had a hat trick this year with Beale's coming against Truman and McGill's coming against Minnesota State.
On defense the Mavs are tops with a 0.65 goals against average and goalkeeper Amy Price is first in the league with a 0.69 goals against average.

Freshman Forward Amanda Iwansky is third on the team with nine goals, four assists and 22 points. She also has three game-winners. Iwansky is fifth in the NCC with 1.29 points per game.
Better late then never for Maverick offense
The Mavs are scoring three times as many goals in the second half as they are in the first half. In their last nine games they have scored just five times in the first half and 22 times in the second half. Despite the offense's early struggles, the defense has kept opponents to just five first-half goals and six second-half goals this year and UNO is out scoring its opponents 49-11 overall. When the Mavs are behind at halftime, they are a perfect 4-0-0 in coming back.
Mavs place five on academic All-NCC team
Seniors Meghan Pile and Amy Price each earned their third academic all-North Central Conference honors as they joined three other Mavericks on the team announced Wednesday by the conference office. Joining the two seniors were juniors Amber Richardson and Beth McGill and sophomore Danielle McCawley, the only 4.00 GPA student-athlete on the list this year. The NCC honored 24 student-athletes with the Mavericks and North Dakota leading the way with five honorees each.
