PSU Sweeps UNO in Opening Match of FSC Classic

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Pittsburg State remained undefeated with a 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 33-31) sweep over Nebraska-Omaha in the opening match of the Florida Southern Classic Friday afternoon at the Jenkins Field House.
Senior middle blocker Carlie Christensen led the Mavericks with 15 kills, while hitting .414 and adding four blocks. Sophomore Ellen Thommes hit .500 with nine kills, four blocks and two service aces.
Defensively, UNO was led by junior Annie Rice's 21 digs and two service aces. Senior setter Katie Agnew recorded her third double-double of the season with 37 assists and 13 digs, while adding five kills.
Both teams played evenly throughout the match with the Gorillas holding a slight .267 to .248 advantage in hitting percentage. UNO, however, had a 65-60 edge in digs and an 8-3 advantage in blocks. The Mavericks were hampered by 13 service errors in the match.
The Mavericks, who dropped to 3-2 on the season, will play the host school, fifth-ranked Florida Southern, at 6 p.m. Friday night. Pittsburg State improved to 6-0 on the season with the win.
