Northwest Missouri State Upsets No. 18 UNO

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State handed the 18th-ranked UNO Maverick volleyball team their third-consecutive loss with a 3-1 (30-25, 26-30, 30-22, 30-28) win Wednesday night in non-conference action at Bearcat Gymnasium.
With the loss, UNO falls to 7-5 on the season while NWMSU evens its record at 9-9.
Senior Carlie Christensen became the 16th player in school history to record 1,000 career kills while leading the Mavericks with 11 kills and nine blocks. Christensen has now recorded 1,009 career kills.
Senior Katie Agnew recorded her team-leading eighth double-double with 38 assists and 18 digs to go along with a team-high three service aces. Joining Christensen in double-figure kills were Nicole McLeod and Kelli Goeser who each notched 10 kills.
The Mavericks were led defensively by junior Annie Rice's 20 digs.
Nebraska-Omaha led by as many as six points in the first game at 9-3, but the Bearcats responded by going on a 27-16 run to close out the game, winning 30-25. Northwest outhit UNO .262 to .205 as the Mavericks committed nine hitting errors.
UNO once again built an early lead in the second frame, leading by seven points at 10-3. NWMSU repsonded by going on a 13-6 tear to tie the game at 16. Four Bearcats errors helped the Mavs pull ahead 19-16.
Consecutive kills by Thommes and Goeser put the Mavs out in front 23-20 before kills by the Bearcats' Sara Falcone, Amber Ryan, and Katie Swenson pulled NWMSU to within one at 24-23. That is as close as the Bearcats would get after a kill by Christensen and two NWMSU attack errors opened the Maverick lead to four points as UNO kept that advantage winning, 30-26, knotting the match at one game each.
Paced by three kills from Rachel Nisi and two service aces by Alicia Johnson, it was Northwest who came out quickly in the third game, taking a 9-3 advantage. Kills by Agnew, Goeser, Christensen, and McLeod helped UNO go on a 7-3 scoring run, pulling the Mavs within two at 12-10.
After hitting .700 in the first two games, Thommes committed three-consecutive hitting errors as the Bearcats scored eight of the next 10 points, including six straight to build a 20-12 advantage. A kill by Christensen capped a 10-6 scoring run as UNO pulled within four at 26-22. However, three Maverick attack errors and a kill by Nisi, helped the Bearcats pull away for the eight-point final margin, giving NWMSU a 2 to 1 advantage in games.
The Mavericks hit a dismal -.067 in the third game while the Bearcats hit .200.
Two service aces by Katie Agnew and kills by Christensen and Ingram helped the Mavs build an early 4-0 lead in game four. The Bearcats responded with a 15-4 scoring run to build a 15-8 advantage. UNO got as close as two points at 20-18, but Northwest once again responded with five-straight points, taking a seven-point lead. Trailing 29-25, the Mavericks saved three match points, but a kill by the Bearcats' Amber Ryan gave NWMSU the victory.
The Mavericks will resume conference action on Saturday, Sept. 22 when they entertain St. Cloud State at 4 p.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse.
