Mavs Wrap Up Homestand This Week

MIAA Soccer Standings
OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (7-4-0, 6-1-0 MIAA) will look to add to its eight-game home winning streak as it plays the final two matches of a four-game homestand this week. The Emporia State University Hornets (1-7-1, 1-5-0 MIAA) will visit on Thursday, Oct. 8 for a 4 p.m. match. The Mavs will head back to the field on Sunday, Oct. 11 to battle the Washburn University Lady Blues (6-4-4, 3-3-0 MIAA) at 1 p.m.
Mavs Pick Up Pair of MIAA Wins At Home Last Week
The Mavericks improved their conference record to 6-1 last week with a pair of wins over Southwest Baptist and Northwest Missouri State on their home field.
UNO shutout SBU on Oct. 1, 3-0. Jessica Powers led the Mavs offensively with a pair of goals, including the game winner in the sixth minute of the first half. She scored her second goal of the game late in the second half, 57 second after Stephanie Sackett put the Mavs up 2-0. Lauren Fox picked up the win in net and split the shutout effort with Elizabeth Odorisio.
The Mavs needed extra time against NWMSU to get the win on Oct. 3. UNO's Melanie Petersen netted a goal at 27:28 of the first half. But the Bearcats' Shannon FitzGerald scored late in the second to force overtime. Jerica Kuncl sealed the win for the Mavs with just eight seconds remaining in the first overtime period to give UNO the win, 2-1.
The Series
UNO is 3-0-1 against Emporia State all time. The Mavs have blanked the Hornets in three of the four meetings, including 2-0 and 3-0 wins last season on Oct. 9 and Oct.18.
The Mavericks have a 3-2 series advantage against the Lady Blues. But it's Washburn who has won the last two meetings between the two schools. WU won both games last season including a 2-1 win at UNO Soccer Field on Oct. 23, which is the last time the Mavs lost at home.
Scouting The Opponents
ESU: The Hornets enter Thursday's match with a 1-7-1 overall record and a 1-5-0 record in the MIAA. ESU's only win of the year came against Missouri Western on Sept. 17 with a 1-0 shutout over the Griffons.
WU: Washburn currently sports a 6-4-4 overall record and a 3-3-0 record in MIAA action. The Lady Blues have a four-game winning streak heading into their match Thursday with NW Missouri State who they are tied for fourth with in the MIAA.
The Coaches
Head coach Don Klosterman enters his 11th season at the helm of the Maverick women's soccer team. He has compiled a 177-43-7 (.795) overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to seven-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2008). In those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons (2002-2007), and led the team to a 2005 National Championship.
During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005). The St. Louis, Mo., native has compiled 10-straight winning seasons and has never won less than 13 matches in a season. Klosterman was ranked 16th in victories among all-time Division II coaches entering the 2009 fall season.
The Hornets are coached by Jim Schneiderhahn who is in his second year with the program. He has compiled a 5-23-2 overall record and is 2-19-1 in MIAA play.
Washburn is guided by seventh-year head coach Tim Collins. He has led the Lady Blues to two NCAA second-round tournament appearances in the last three years. Collins owns a 66-47-21 overall record at WU.
What's On Tap?
UNO will hit the road for the next two weeks beginning with a trip to St. Joseph, Mo., to battle Missouri Western on Thursday, Oct. 15. The match is at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 18 the Mavs will travel to Emporia, Kan., to wrap up their series with Emporia State. The game is slated for 1 p.m.
