MIAA Standings
The #23-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (13-4-1, 12-1-1 MIAA) enters the final week of the 2009 regular season. The Mavs, chasing their first ever MIAA title and a bid to their eighth-straight NCAA tournament will play two matches on the road this week. On Thursday, Nov. 5, the Mavs will face Southwest Baptist (6-9-2, 4-9-1 MIAA) at 3 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 7 the Mavs will square off against Central Missouri (11-5-2, 10-3-1 MIAA) at 2 p.m. UNO, winners of its last four games and unbeaten in its last nine, is 4-3-1 on the road this season.
UNO Stays Perfect In Home Games With 1-0 Win Over Lions
A rainy Thursday forced UNO to play its final home game of the regular season at Morrison Stadium on the campus of Creighton University on Oct. 29. The Mavs, 7-0 at UNO Soccer Field this season, kept its unbeaten streak at home alive with a 1-0 win over Missouri Southern on Senior Day. #Megan Jensen# scored her first goal of the season and the first game winner of her career. Jensen blasted a free kick from the right side of the field deep in Lions territory that took a Maverick bounce past MSSU goalkeeper Randi Russell and into the back of the net in the 24th minute. UNO outshot MSSU 22-2 in the game.
The Series
Thursday's match with SBU will be the seventh meeting between the two schools. The Mavericks have the upper hand with a 5-0-1 all-time record against the Bearcats. UNO blanked SBU on Oct. 1, 3-0. It was the third-straight time the Mavs have shut them out.
Saturday will mark the 12th meeting between UNO and UCM. The Mavs own a 10-1 all-time record against the Jennies. UNO has outscored UCM 35-6 in the past 11 meetings, including a 2-0 win on Sept. 17 earlier this season.
Scouting The Opponents
SBU: The Bearcats enters Thursday's game with a 6-9-2 overall record and are 4-9-1 in conference play. SBU is winless in its last four matches. Its last win came on Oct. 15 against Missouri Southern, 4-0.
UCM: The Jennies, winners of their last four matches, are third in the MIAA with a conference record of 10-3-1. UCM will host NW Missouri State on Thursday before hosting the Mavs on Saturday.
The Coaches
Head coach #Don Klosterman# enters his 11th season at the helm of the Maverick women's soccer team. He has compiled a 183-43-8 (.799) overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to seven-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2008). In those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons (2002-2007), and led the team to a 2005 National Championship.
During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005). The St. Louis, Mo., native has compiled 10-straight winning seasons and has never won less than 13 matches in a season. Klosterman was ranked 16th in victories among all-time Division II coaches entering the 2009 fall season.
SBU is led by first-year head coach Rob Podeyn. He is the eighth head coach in school history. Missouri Southern is coached by Trevor Wachsman who is in his seventh year. Central Missouri is led by Lewis Theobald who enters his third season as head coach. Last season he guided the Jennies to their second MIAA championship and a 15-4-2 record.
Conference Breakdown
With a 12-1-1 conference mark on the year, the Mavericks are tied for first place with Truman in the race for the MIAA title. The Mavs and the Bulldogs both have 37 points. Central Missouri is in third with a record of 10-3-1 in the MIAA and 31 points.
The Bulldogs settled for a 1-1 tie with Missouri Western on Nov. 3. TSU plays its regular season finale on Thursday, Nov. 5 when they travel to Emporia, Kan., to face Emporia State (1-15-1, 1-13-0 MIAA) at 1 p.m. The complete MIAA standings are on page five of this release.
NCAA Selection Monday
The top-six teams from a combined pool of the MIAA, Lone Star and Heartland conferences receive NCAA tournament berths. The top two seeds in the region will earn the right to host first and second round play. The fourth and fifth seeds will join the top seed in one sub-regional, while the three and six seeds will meet up with the second seed in the other sub-regional.
The NCAA will announce the six teams selected to represent the South Central region via a video webcast selection show at 6 p.m. Central time on Monday, Nov. 9 on NCAA.com.
