EMPORIA, Kan. – Emporia State stole home twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 5-4 win over the UNO baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Glennen Field. The Mavericks dropped three of four games to the 23rd-ranked Hornets in their first ever MIAA series and are now 11-8 on the season and 1-3 in league play.
Shortstop #Evan Porter crushed a home run to account for three of the Mavericks' runs while Drew Schwab and Jeremy Klein# each picked up two hits.
UNO pitchers allowed Emporia State only four hits. #Kyle Dahman# started for the Mavs, going six innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits. He struck out four and walked two. #Tom Schmidt# took the loss in relief to fall to 2-1. Both runs he allowed were unearned.
The Mavericks led 4-3 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, but Schmidt started out on a rough note by hitting Emporia's Connor Crumbliss. Crumbliss eventually got to third on a throwing error and a lineout. He then stole home to make it 4-4. ESU's Jeremy Francis stole home with the winning run on another throwing error later in the inning.
It was the second straight game the Mavericks had surrendered the lead in the late innings. They took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third when #Colby McCord# walked and Klein later singled. They were both brought home on a two-out home run by Porter, his third of the season.
UNO tacked on a fourth run in the top of the sixth when #Matt Meyer# drew a bases-loaded walk, bringing home #Brett Koehn#.
Emporia State got three runs back in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a fielder's choice and a two-run single by Anthony Dreiling.
The Mavericks will play their first home games of the season next weekend when they host the Missouri Southern State University Lions and the Ballpark at Boys Town. The teams will play double-headers on Saturday and Sunday.
