OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO men's basketball team earned a 90-84 win over Southwest Baptist at Sapp Fieldhouse on Wednesday night, marking two special occasions for the Mavericks. Head coach #Derrin Hansen# captured his 100th career win, and junior guard #Mitch Albers# surpassed the 1,000 career points milestone. With its sixth straight win, Nebraska-Omaha is 9-4 (6-3 MIAA), while SBU drops to 7-8 (4-5 MIAA).
Albers now has 1,010 points in two-plus seasons as a Maverick and has been the team's top scorer in six consecutive contests. Albers led all scorers with a season-high 29 points – just one off his career best – after shooting 10-for-14 from the field. The Papillion, Neb., native was 5-for-7 from 3-point range and also had four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Three Mavs joined Albers in double figures – senior guard #Tyler Bullock# (17), senior guard #Torrian Harris# (15) and redshirt freshman center #John Karhoff# (14). Karhoff's mark tied his career high for points, and Harris also matched his career best for rebounds with 11 boards, originally set last week against Truman. In addition, Harris achieved the third double-double of his career.
SBU was topped by Ryan Dougherty's 25 points, as he matched Albers with five 3-pointers. Kurt Koenig added 16 points, while Nick James had 15 and Stephen Cotton finished with 12. Cotton also led the way on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds, and Tre Smith dished out a game-best 11 assists.
Cotton hit back-to-back buckets to open the game, and the Mavs were helped by two 3-pointers from Albers. UNO went up 19-11 on a layup from senior Matt Starks, but the Bearcats overtook the score at 26-25 on a three from Dougherty. The two teams traded leads seven more times, then tied it at 36-all with under a minute to go. But Koenig threw in a layup in the closing seconds to give Southwest Baptist a narrow 38-36 advantage by the half.
Albers opened the second half with a 3-pointer that put him over the 1,000-point milestone to 1,002. Smith hit a triple of his own to extend the Bearcats' lead to 50-41. SBU took its biggest lead of the game at 56-46 with a Dougherty layup, but Bullock chipped in three baskets over three minutes to cut it down.
Freshman guard #Caleb Steffensmeier# later tied it up at 79-all with six minutes left, and sophomore forward #Alex Welhouse# put the Mavs ahead by two on a right-side jumper. Harris then popped in a layup, drew a foul from Nick James to hit a free throw and extended the lead to five. With less than a minute to go, Welhouse tipped in a shot and dropped in the subsequent charity shot to seal the win at 90-84.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 15, hosting Missouri Southern. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
