Mavericks Let Lead Slip Away in 3-2 Loss at UC-Col

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The UNO women's soccer team let a halftime lead slip away in falling to UC-Colorado Springs, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.
Bri Exstrom and Julia Adler each scored their first goals of the season to lift the Mavericks to a 2-1 halftime lead, but the Mountain Lions came back with two goals in the second half to win the match. UNO fell to 3-6-2 on the season with their fourth loss in a row, while the Mountain Lions improved to 6-3-0.
UNO controlled the game early with a flurry of shots on UC-Colorado Springs, but the Mountain Lions struck first against the run of play when Julia Saenz sent in a cross that was accidentally redirected by a UNO defender into its own net. The goal came at the 19:01 mark in the first half.
The Mavs quickly regained form though, and Exstrom equalized at the 23:28 mark on a penalty kick. Exstrom worked her way into the box and was fouled on a shot attempt. She stepped up and converted the penalty kick for her first goal of the year, after netting five goals for the Mavericks last season.
Adler put the Mavs in front after she headed home a rebound off of a Danielle Archuleta shot that hit the crossbar. Adler's goal was the first of her career and came at the 36:57 mark. The Mavs outshot UC-Colorado Springs in the first half, 10-4, with both teams putting four shots on goal.
But in the second half, UCCS put its chances away. Jenna Gist leveled the score on a header off of a corner kick in the 57th minute. Then in the 83rd minute, Saenz got free in the box, dribbled in and scored from 10 yards out to put the Mountain Lions up 3-2.
UNO finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots, but UCCS had a 7-6 lead in shots on goal.
The Mavs get a two-week break before returning to the road to face Western Illinois on Oct. 20.
