OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO men's tennis team competed in its last competition of the fall season this weekend at the Omaha Collegiate Invite hosted by Creighton University at Koch Tennis Center.
Sophomore Anthony Forcucci opened singles action in flight A, dropping the first two matches to South Dakota State's Justin Pyle (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) and Ben Gendron in straight sets (6-0, 6-0). Forcucci and sophomore Carlos Ramos Salazar met up at end of the bracket, battling each other for seventh place. Salazar dropped two sets early in the tournament to Creighton's Kyle Obermeier (6-2, 6-3) and Dominic Rossetto of South Dakota State (6-3, 7-6). Ramos and Forcucci played each other for the seventh place finish, Ramos came out on top, 7-6, 6-1.
In flight B, sophomore Brandon Otoski and junior Peter Greteman both dropped their first two matches before meeting each other in the seventh-place final. Otoski dropped his first set to J.T. Christian of Creighton (6-0, 6-1), then fell to Chris Baron of South Dakota State (6-2, 6-0). Greteman surrendered his first match to Northern Colorado's Jeff Carlson and his second match to Parker Lawley of SDSU, with results of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively. P. Greteman dropped his final match of the day to Dominic Rossetto, 6-2, 6-3, while Otoski fell to Parker Lawley, 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman Nathan Greteman, junior Andrew Lescelius and seniors Mike Hupf and Ben Williams competed for the Mavs in flight C. In the opener, Williams fell in a tough match to Gabe Nagy (7-5, 6-1) and another heartbreaker to Jordan Loughnan of Northern Colorado (6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-8). Lescelius lost his first match to Andrew Lepine of Northern Colorado, 6-2, 7-5. In Sunday's match, Lescelius dropped a tough one to Creighton's Lorenz Laurel from Creighton, 6-1, 6-0.
Hupf was defeated by Jamie Dash from South Dakota State (6-0, 6-0), while Greteman was just short of Creighton's Sean Mathison (6-3, 6-0) and CU's Joe Nora (6-3, 6-4). In the final match of the day Hupf and Lescelius squared off, Lecselius came out on top winning, 7-6, 7-5.
Saturday's doubles action featured four of the Mavs' doubles teams against Creighton's four pairs. Creighton swept the Mavs in all four matches. At No. 1 doubles, Forcucci and Salazar dropped the set to Christian and Bermeier (8-2), and at No. 2 the Greteman brothers fell 8-3 to Paluch and Mathison. No. 3 doubles saw Hupf and Otoski slip 8-1 to Nagy and Norman and in the final match, and at No. 4 Lescelius and Williams lost 8-0 to Laurel and Baker.
The Mavs had a big upset in the second pairing of doubles on Saturday against South Dakota State. At No. 1, Forcucci and Salazar defeated Baron and Pyle 8-4 for UNO's first win of the day. The Greteman brothers fell short against SDSU's Lawly and Thorp, finishing the match at 8-2. In the final doubles match, Hupf and Otoski dropped the match to Dash and Rossetto, 8-1. The Mav's dropped all three to Northern Colorado Ramos and Forcucci fell 8-5, Greteman and Hupf dropped the set 8-4 and Greteman and Williams fell 8-2.
Nebraska Omaha opens the spring season in February, hosting Nebraska Wesleyan at Hanscom Park Tennis Center.
